Shoulder pads - a good thing?

there is a different between 80s pads and todays pads that are just there to give the right form to your shoulders

shoulder pads will come back as big as in the eighties as everything does... skinny jeans, lower or higher rise... it always looks ridiculous when we think of it, but designers find the way to make ir wearable and modern... if we follor the old 20 year circle rule, pads will probably be here in about two years

i'm very petite and like a little extra structure. shoulder pads aren't right for all my jackets but sometimes it makes the look.

I often wear them.

At Brian Ferry tribute nights.

Cut them out people really though....it's so awful..

I don't like the skinny jeans and if shoulder pads come back, i'll boycott them too.

They shoulve come in already if they were going to I think. I mean we are smack in the middle of a five year eighties revival and they haven't been on any of the runways

i dont exactly agree with you stillettogirl.:flower: you are certainly right about the eighties revival but thinking about it... i think we wont see the shoulderpads come back paired with skinny-skinny jeans or in an 80's mood.

as collections are getting more and more structured lattely (i'm thinking of balenciaga ss07, marc jacobs fw08, etc, DG ss'7) i think the pads will be introduced in this sort of manner.
However, it is also true that shoulder pads will have to fight against higher-rise trousers which is something designers have been introducing for a while now.

I just hope not to see these two things paired together in a long time... not until i'm prepared (psychologically) for it.

I need shoulder pad because I have really narrow shoulder and a wide hip.
Think a size 2/4 top and a size 6/8 bottom. ie I buy tops in petites only, before petites were common, I had to resort to shoulder pad because I am short waisted too! But now I only shop at stores that offers a wide selection of petite and goodbye shoulder pads!B)
so I have it only jackets though ...but definitely not the eighties huge style!

they are back! it's official

^^this is just the first step... i'm sure they'll get much better and way not so theatrical/horrid/ridiculous

ok- so...
they are definitely all over the runways now..

what do you all think...?
yay or nay...?!?

^_^...

a big yay from me. I particularly like the 1940s conception of the silhouette. shoulder pads can be done in a proportional way, and more structured clothing is always welcome.

Good timing on this bump :winkiss:

I think that some of the variations which are around currently are much WORSE than the 80's reincarnates... and I didn't think it could really get much worse than though. Agreeing with loomer's post, I do like them when done in the nature of the ones from 1950 and previous. Unfortunately most designers are leaning toward the cheesy 80s-90s revival type of pad, thus most of the current ones are gross to me. However, Margiela are doing it right and for that I am grateful.

speaking of, I just got one of my holy grails - a knee length MMM coat with the raised/extended shoulders! I'm really glad because of what I said above - extended shoulders are hard to do right or in a serious way, imo... but the Margiela cut is different for me. I think that the shoulders have just enough structure, height and extensions to really add to the silhouette as a whole.
