Shu Pei is the fashion world's new face (by Annika Bergson)
The Chinese tiger doesn't challenge only the world economy, it has also leaped into the world of fashion. One of the hottest model names at the moment is Shu Pei. DV Mode traveled to Paris to meet the new model star.
It's a cool and beautiful July morning in Paris, the clock is already past nine. Our topmodel is late but eventually she comes in a hurry puffing and apologizing. She had been shown a wrong subway station and had to go through many blocks before she found the classic Studio Astre where the photoshoot for DV Mode would take place.
21-year old Shu Pei is one of the latest rising stars from China who marches in front on big fashion houses' catwalks. She has had busy days in Paris where haute couture shows for fall/winter 2011/2012 has just finished. Dior, Chanel and Valentino were few of the fashion houses she walked for.
Shu Pei, who nowadays lives in New York, appears herself surprised that suddenly she finds herself in the center of the fashion world.
- I don't feel myself as a top model, she says and appears almost embarrassed.
Shu Pei grew up in Henan in eastern China in a little town where her mother worked for a post office and father as a car insurance salesman. She had no siblings because of the one-child policy in China. When Shu Pei was 16-years old she was tired of school so her parents thought she should see the world outside of her little hometown and sent her to New York to a high school. Her parents' good friend took care of her for a week until she could rent a very little room in a residence.
- The only word I could say in English was "hello", she tells.
After a year of studies school tiredness hit her again. Shu Pei went to a modeling agency just for the heck of it, just to earn little money, and got a job. Step by step she worked to the more prestige jobs, ending up in shows for the biggest fashion houses and cover shoots for the most famous fashion magazines. She is one of the Maybelline's spokepersons and the latest face for Vera Wang.
With her a bit broken English she answers questions about her career.
- I didn't think of becoming a model, it wasn't something I dreamed of when I was little. I lived in a little town and being a model was something very distant. But I dreamed of traveling the world. And now that dream has been fullfilled.
Yes, she has to do a lot of traveling, which means a lot of flying hours and lots of waiting at airports. But Shu Pei feels seldom lonely.
- I like to travel alone. If I would have someone with me, I should also take care of that person. It's better to be just by yourself.
In home in New York Shu Pei enjoys many galleries in Chelsea where she lives. She pauses for coffee shops, walks in Central Park, does shopping and goes to the Hamptons during the weekends. Like a young woman in modeling world is supposed to do.
What she likes about her job is foremost a chance to wear beautiful clothing. Chanel and Givenchy are among her favourites. In private she prefers jeans and T-shirt. What she knows about Sweden is that there are many young promising designers.
- I have met many people from Sweden and they always have had nice clothes. When asked where they have bought them, the answer is always "from Sweden". I would gladly like to travel to Sweden and do some shopping there, she laughs. I like Acne. And H&M is Swedish, isn't it?
The less nicer things in modeling is she can become tired of all the flying even though she never suffers from jetlag and that she seldom has time to meet her Chinese model friends.
- Our base is in New York but we all travel and don't have time to meet each other. So we say that we have to eat together after shows but often we don't have time even for that so we see each other only at backstages.
How a 21-year old top model who left a small town in China sees her future? It seems Shu Pei hasn't thought about it much but she believes in ten years or so she's perhaps married and has children. Her boyfriend in Shanghai is also an only child in his family and if two people without siblings get married, they have rights to get two children in China.
Shu Pei's proud parents haven't come to New York to meet their daughter yet because she is always busy but in a year or next it will eventually happen. She herself has been back to China many times for her work.
- China is a big market for fashion and one day I will move back there. China is my home.
It's time for the photoshoot and when Shu Pei has got her make-up, hair done and clothed for the cover shoot in Prada, her shyness is gone. A professional and confident young woman steps forward who despite of her sky-high heels stands firmly on the ground.
