Well, as far as I know, Shu Qi's career went like this.

She became a nude model, then a category III actress (involves nudity but is not really what America would consider p*rn), worked her way up to doing music videos, then took on small roles in more serious movies. Now, she's one of the major actresses.

I love it when she speaks Cantonese. She has a Taiwanese accent, and it's so cute.

firstly i thought she's from mainland china and not taiwan.

secondly she was a category III actress. category III is extreme-soft p*rn, definitely not the sort of p*rn you're thinking of but i guess you can term her a p*rn star, at least in the beginning. what is a category III film like? think of the french film "swimming pool" without the plot and all sex scenes only haha

i don't find her real voice annoying but i have heard the dubbed ones and they're not very good

i like her a lot. she reminds me of an asian natalia vodianova. to me, her looks > zhang ziyi.

she is taiwanese...and she just did some movies and took some shot as a so called p*rn actress to get noticed, however, after being national noticed, she change her style in the screen and she didi that so great, we all like to see she is more and more sucessful as a real good actress.

mostly, all chinese men admire she for that natural sexual quality she was born with, and for chinese women, fortunately, we like her too.

I think their looks play the trick. Western people see Ziyi Zhang's small eyes and small mouth as classic Chinese beauty. Lucy Liu is another example. Shu Qi's beauty is opposite of Zhang's. It's funny that the way Asian see beauty is different from Western.

I totally understand what you mean.
I see a lot of Taiwanese variety shows where all the girls have really cutesy voices!

To be honest, Shu Qi's voice is a little cutesy too, but I like her, I think she has spunk and her beauty is different and refreshing. I guess she just has the X factor.
