Singers/bands in your country that we should check out

I thought it would be cool to have a post where we talk about our favourite less well known/'indie' bands where we live.

So post the name of a band/singer you love
and then say who they sound like
and maybe why you like them/what they remind you of.

I'm mainly doing this because I want to widen my music interests and not just listen to english bands and hopefully a lot of you are the same!

the immediate (+ obligatory picture that follows them everywhere )
probably the best dublin band i've ever heard.

Just when you think you have them pegged as '60s revivalists with a bit of a modern edge, they morph over the course of three minutes into a sabre-toothed rock beast capable of eating your children and having indecent carnal knowledge of (or should that be with?) your pets.

A multi-instrumentalist, Feeney plays eleven instruments on 13 songs, including keyboards, alto recorder, treble recorder, harmonium, accordion, violin, harmonica, melodica and xylophone.

She had no manager, no PR, no agents or shadowy figures in the background discreetly helping to plan her next move. From the very first jotting down of ideas in her "thought copy" (exercise book) for the lyrics and music, right through to the eventual sending out of the finished CDs to reviewers and radio stations, Julie micro-managed the entire project on her own. She composed, arranged, produced and sang all thirteen songs and played most of the instruments on the album herself. She designed the cover art-work. And she financed the recording and manufacturing costs by a succession of bank loans, eventually setting up her own record label - mittens - named after her mother's favourite cat.

We have Bright Eyes, Tilly & The Wall, The Faint... and those are all I know from memory. Plus 311, which are one of the worst bands in musical history (almost as bad as Bright Eyes...)

And those are all city-specific, since a comprehensive list of American musicians would require more research than I'm willing to do...

Carola Standertskjöld (23rd of March 1941 - 12th of November 1997) was one of the most popular singers in Finland in the 60s. She was very intelligent, cultured and spoke many languages fluently - and also sang on those languages. Her music was very jazzy schlager and often with motifs from blues and soul. Carola was also very interested about French chansons. She mostly sang on Finnish, Swedish, English and French (I think she went to Sorbonne University at some point - and she loved Courvoisier!). She was very exotic to be a Finnish artist.

She had a heartbrakingly beautiful voice, perfect for someone who sings jazz. She put her heart to everything she sang

After the mid-70s her stagefright got a hold of her and she stopped touring and therefore didn't publish anything very often. She did a very short-lived comeback in the 80s, but wasn't, again, interested about touring. Sadly she died of Alzheimer's at a very young age.

I'd post sound clips if I'd just find some...I love her songs to death.

Oh, I just noticed the "who they sounded like"-question...well in Carola's case I would think of those great jazz singers from the past, aswell as some of the 60s French artists.

Anna Ternheim, she's a really good singer/songwriter type of artist from Sweden. Her english is kinda terrible... But she's good. Really good!

Sybil Vane: A trio of young girls from Barcelona, they are not really good live, but I like their music, their first album "Mermelada de Tomate" was awesome!!

It is her. It isn't exactly an example of her jazz songs, which I adore, but I don't think any of them are in the Net.

Is music too dominated by the English language?

This post by ivypixie in the gig thread reminded me of something i've often wondered about...

Asta Kask either 23th or 24th February!!! Swedish punk/hardcore, and the best thing of all is that they sing on swedish.

...is it frustrating that the majority of music today seems to have English lyrics? Does it take from the music itself for it to be in a language other than your own, even if you are proficient? [although irish is my first language, living in an english speaking country means i've no frame of reference for any of this]
do you ever find yourself seeking out music just because it is not in English...
