Singers/bands in your country that we should check out

I can't believe I haven't wrote things in this thread before, I'm like the biggest pusher of Norwegian music, haha :P So, I've picked out some bands, and I hope you'll take some time listen to them, it's worth a check (and with MySpace, it's easy!). Enjoy! ^_^

120 DAYS www.myspace.com/120days (NO) - I've been liking this band since the start, when they were called the Beautiful People, through the name Sex Beat, and then to what they're now. Seen them twice. Electronica love, hyped in the media the past half year where the critics says their sound is kind of a bit Joy Division. But don't be scared, they got their own sound!

BIG BOMBASTIC COLLECTIVE http://www.myspace.com/bigbombasticcollective (DK/NO/SE) - jazz with Swedish lyrics. I'm not really so into jazz, but this is cozy stuff, and, haha, so indie that they played at my school some weeks ago :P

CHERUBS www.myspace.com/cherubs (NO/UK) - GORGEOUS! Sounds dreamy. They're only playing one gig in Norway this spring, and I'm crying myself to death over the fact that it takes 10 hours with the bus to that city and that I don't own money at all. Love, love, love them so much  AND even the songs on their MS-profile is not the best songs!

CLOROFORM http://www.myspace.com/cloroform (NO) - they might be a bit typical for the Norwegian scene, especially the song Public Pervert, which are on their myspace profile. They're groovy!

DATAROCK http://www.myspace.com/datarock (NO) - well, they should be pretty well-known already. A friend of mine borrowed me a CD with them last week, and I got hooked! Lovely original, elektronica (the word 'Datarock' means 'Computer rock' btw).

THE MOVING OOS http://www.myspace.com/movingoos (NO) - sounds like it's taken out from the '70s! Mmm! They were supposed to play in my city on Sunday, but had to cancel the gig, but hopefully they're going to get a new date, I'm so gonna see them!

PIRATE LOVE http://www.myspace.com/thepiratelove (NO) - garage/punk/surf their site tells. I haven't been able to attend any concert with them yet, but I should! They warmed up for The Bloody Hollies last fall. I like them a lot!

PLEASURE www.myspace.com/pleasuremusic (NO/UK)- mm, just like with Datarock, they're pretty known already. First time I listened to them, I just wanted to DANCE, DANCE, DANCE. Pop-electro. I'm going to see them this summer, as they're going to play at several music festivals. Haha, my bestfriend said they sounded like Atomic Kittens, but DO NOT listen to her, she was drunk when she said it :P

ROCKETTOTHESKY http://www.myspace.com/rockettothesky (NO) - cute, soft, fun, melancholic dreamy dreamy dreamy. A'cappella/trance/shoegaze is what her profile tells. I'm going to see her later this month.

SALVATORE www.myspace.com/tjallvatore (NO) - instrumental electronica. Was at a gig with them in January, and it was much fun. I notice now that I'm not too good with describing music and figure out what they sound like, I just know that anyway, you should check these out.

What a great thread! I'm gonna look into some of these artists; thanks for sharing.

I wanted to push Asian music out there. I'm actually from the States, but I've been obsessed with Asian music for quite some time now.

Highly recommend: Faye Wong and Jay Chou. (You can listen to some of their songs on youtube; I think all of Jay's MVs are posted there, actually! There are plenty of Faye ones there too.)
They both sing in Mandarin. I don't understand a word of Mandarin, and they are my two favorite artists. Yeah. Their music is very variable, imo.
- Faye has a lot of terrific ballads, but I would classify her music as alternative. She reminds me of Tori Amos sometimes...although I like Faye's music better. She sings about an octave higher than most female singers and her voice is crystal clear (even though she smokes...it's amazing). She's endlessly creative...I'd recommend finding these songs: "Jiang Ai", "Dreams", "Bored", "Red Bean", "Eyes On Me", "No Regrets", "Hero."
- Jay is more R&B/hip-hop, but has done LOTS of terrific alternative stuff. Plus, he has tons of great ballads. And even rap! He's good at it too. (He writes his own music.) His debut album and "Common Orange Jasmine" are his best albums, imo. I'd recommend these songs: "Adorable Woman", "Love Before the Century", "Simple Love", "Clear Day", "Nocturne", "The Orcs", "General", "Double Blade", "In The Name Of The Father."

Also getting into J-rock at the moment and want to recommend: L'arc~En~Ciel. I'm absolutely in love with their song "Living In Your Eyes" at the moment.

Ok, let me think...

I don't really like most Dutch bands/artists, but these are quite good

RELAX
Pete Philly & Perquisite

both are Hiphop-esque mixed with some Jazz and other influences

LMAO, I'm still continuing to plug Asian music:

Mayday - Very popular Taiwanese alternative rock band. They're teh amazing. I've only been a fan for a little more than a month now...and they're already my favorite band. Have yet to hear a song from them that I dislike.

DBSK - I don't really like boybands too much, but I make an exception for them. They're a Korean boyband, but one of the few in which ALL the members can sing really well. Pop and R&B sound. I'd recommend their song "Hug", which they've sung in English, Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean, lol. (And bonus: they're excellent performers too...damn can they dance.)

Good idea. I love discovering new musicians. My tastes are pretty eclectic. I love classical, showtunes, pop, soft rock, jazz, folk... Really as long as something moves me in some way I'm happy. I'm very into these artists at the moment:

Kelly Sweet: She calls herself a pop singer which is probably the best way to generalize what she does, but her debut album, "We Are Once" has influences ranging from jazz, folk, new age and rock. Many of her songs are origonal but her most notable cover is Aerosmith's "Dream on" which, in Kelly's voice sound like a differnet song altogether: etheral and soothing. Check out her myspace: www.myspace.com/kellysweetmusic and her website: www.kelly-sweet.com

Alexa Ray Joel: OK yes she's the spawn of a rock star and a model (Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley) but she doesn't seem eager to cash in on her parents fame. Her debut EP "Sketches" was released independantly. She describes her sound like this: "I call my music pop/jazz/blues, but there's also a "funk" element there with my more upbeat songs (as well as an old school rock/R&B element that the boys add in their instrumentation--and hey, there's even a country song in the mix now!). My voice (so I'm told) is rather jazzy, and my piano accompaniment is classically-influenced....you be the judge." Her myspace is here www.myspace.com/alexarayjoel and here's her website: www.alexarayjoel.com

Emmy Rossum: Yes, she's an actress turned singer, but don't gag yet. She's actually a singer-turned actress-turned singer. Emmy spent six years as a chorus kid at the Metropolitan opera and after leaving sang country ballads with Dolly Parton in the film Songcatcher, pop in the film Nola, and showtunes in The Phantom of the Opera. Her debut solo album "Inside Out" doesn't fall into any of those genres- at least not neatly. Emmy dubs it "Ambient pop" and on first listen to the single "Slow Me Down" comparisons to Imogean Heap and Enya leap to mind- but while those artists use heavy synthesizers Emmy recorded and mixed 150 tracks of her voice to achieve that effect. She goes overboard layering her vocals and harmonies on some tracks (including the single which I think is the weakest on the album) but on other tracks the effect is haunting. Emmy draws on her background influences throughout, using a bit of a twang on some songs, a choral sound on others and enbracing pop fully on some. She wrote all they lyrics and cowrote all the music with the exception of one cover of "Rainy Days and Mondays". Here's her myspace: www.myspace.com/emmyrossum
and her website www.emmyrossum.com

Lauren Molina: Lauren became known to Broadway fans for having recently starred as Johanna in the Broadway revival of "Sweeney Todd". She's also appeared off-Broadway in a musical version of "The Importance of Being Earnest" called "Earnest in Love" and "The Hidden Sky" Her debut, "Doo-Be-Doo" shies away from showtunes into what she calls "indy/folk/pop". It's whimsical, light, but never silly. Lauren also plays the cello, the guitar, and the ukulele, and she paints. She's my age and makes me feel spectacularly unaccomplished. Anyway here's her myspace: www.myspace.com/laurenmolinamusic
and her website: www.laurenmolina.com (you can check out her paintings on there too)

Teddy Geiger! An 18-year-old John Mayer/child music prodigy. Plays acoustic guitar, bass, piano, drums and has been composing quality songs since he was 8 years old (one of them is on his debut album).

And from PTown, there's The Dandy Warhols, Pink Martini, and The Shins, but they're all pretty well known. Google will turn up lots of info and music clips.

Because Asian music needs more love (and because I've discovered a lot of great artists since I last posted here, back in ... April hahaha). All Korean music because I've been into that lately, lol:

Epik High - 3-member hip-hop/rap Korean group. I was never a big fan of hiphop and straight up rap, but they've changed my minds. The oldest member of the group, Tablo, got his undergrad and Masters (in creative writing) at Stanford University ~~ so they do incorporate a lot of English in their songs. I don't understand Korean at all, but I read translations of their lyrics and seriously, their creativity is astounding. They rap about all sorts of things to, the government, politics, love, music, etc ~~ check out their song LOVE LOVE LOVE. The song is great, but so is the music video (such an accurate representation of love, isn't it?:( http://youtube.com/watch?v=1RTl3HXK_NI

CSJH The Grace
- 4-girl Korean dance/vocal group. Seriously the only girl group I will ever go crazy and fangirl over, lol. I usually prefer lower voices so I don't listen to too many girl groups or female artists in general, but they're really good. And damn can they dance: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=cbh3EeZUmNo

DBSK - I've already spazzed over them, but they're great! Check them out!

F.T Island
- Brand new group, 5 members. All of them are really young, too. I think the drummer is like 15 years old and the oldest is 17. All born in the 90s. Which makes me feel really really old. And like a pedo, but I digress. Lead singer has an amazing voice. The rest of them play instruments and their songs are catchy! Nice pop/rock sound. I'm also fond of their music videos, because they get beat up and stabbed and all that good stuff ~~ sometimes I forget they're so young! Check out their song "Love Sick" --> http://youtube.com/watch?v=aJuCsn_Z-Hg
