Today Anthony Vaccarello tapped relative newcomer Sophia Ahrens for the first look at his Fall show, a position previously held by superstar Anja Rubik. Clearly, Ahrens has impressed the team at Vaccarello, and they certainly aren’t the only ones. With five Fall 2015 opening spots under her belt, Ahrens has caught the attention of everyone from Narciso Rodriguez to Marni’s Consuelo Castiglioni. Opening five top shows is a rare accomplishment, but Ahrens is taking it in stride. Backstage at Vaccarello, Ahrens told Style.com’s senior beauty editor, Amber Kallor, she’s simply thankful. “I’m always just really honored and really grateful and thankful to the people who gave me the opportunity to do that.”
In addition to her opening spots at Marni, Narciso Rodriguez, Thakoon, David Koma, and Joseph, Ahrens has kept busy with turns at Burberry, Fendi, Gareth Pugh, and Calvin Klein. “Every show is always different and you have a different feeling,” Ahrens said. “You have the music, you have the clothes, and you have the look. You have that energy that is part of the clothes and part of the music, part of the whole attitude, and you have to channel that.”
Ahrens’ strong features and elegant presence on the runway call to mind the idiosyncratic beauties of the late ’90s. It’s this distinctive look that has gotten her noticed on and off the runway. Scouted at just 12 while shopping, the 19-year-old’s first major gig was a star-studded Prada campaign back in 2013 that placed her alongside names like Christy Turlington Burns and Catherine McNeil. While most would dive headfirst into modeling after snagging a buzz-worthy campaign, Ahrens took time off to finish her studies. “That’s my little secret: I had school until last summer. It was one of those things that I just had to finish for myself. When I do something, I have to do it properly.”
Expect to see a lot more of this face catwalking properly on the runways this season.
