On MDC's The Hot List:

Whether it’s in campaigns (Marc Jacobs, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana), editorial (Pop, Vogue Germany, Self Service) or on the runway (there’s barely a major catwalk she hasn’t been on), the industry seems to be falling hard for the eccentric charm of Sora Choi. Her delightfully diverse look coupled with strong personal style and a genuine free-spiritedness has seen this kooky Korean booked by the likes of Steven Meisel, Juergen Teller, Mario Sorrenti, and David Sims — to mention but a few.

[VOGUE'S fashion bookings editor Rosie Vogel-Eades looks for many things in a model as she casts the shoots on the pages of Vogue. For the second time this season, with exclusive photographs by her husband Matthew Eades, she rounds up the girls she's most excited about right now - revealing what makes a great model in her discerning eye.

Sora Choi: Korea, 23
Sora has evolved from winner of Korea’s Next Top Model into a true runway star, with over 50 show appearances this season. Watch out for her fantastic personal style and slightly bonkers Instagram account.

Meet the Manga-Loving Gamer Girl Who Ruled the Fall Shows
Sora Choi was one of the most popular faces on the runways this season, walking over 50 different shows in New York, Paris, London, and Milan, but her career trajectory was hardly straightforward. In fact, it never would have happened if it weren’t for a well-timed favor she did for a friend back in Seoul. Though she’d been encouraged by family and strangers alike to take up modeling, Choi found the proposition less than enticing. It wasn’t until she tagged along with an aspiring model pal that she found herself drawn into the business. “It was quite the peculiar situation,” says Choi, backstage after the Louis Vuitton show. “My friend really wanted to be a model, but she was scared to go to agency meetings alone, so I went along with her. Once we went to the agency, they signed me on the spot!” Sometimes, all you need is a little help from your friends.

Making her international debut at Louis Vuitton’s Resort show two years ago, Choi has quietly become a force in the industry, appearing in Marc Jacobs’s jam-packed Spring ads, shooting stories with Mario Sorrenti and Emma Summerton, and making a name for herself as one of the most versatile faces on the catwalk, in the past year. Though the powers that be are currently in love with Choi’s sophisticated look, she admits her newfound career took some getting used to. “I was just a normal girl living life, going to school, but I’m glad this all happened,” says Choi. “[Modeling] is fun and exhilarating, but it’s also what you make of it. This was a huge season for me, and I hope to do many more—it’s such an awesome feeling to have all these designers and casting directors believe in me. Sometimes, I can’t believe it!”

When you get to walk the bulk of fashion month’s big shows, you’re liable to have a few major moments, and for Choi the highlight this season was doing Marc Jacobs right alongside Lady Gaga. And for the record, those oversize platforms were every bit as daunting as they looked. “I have never worn shoes so high before, and I have some pretty chunky shoes! I kept thinking, ‘What if I fall?’ But I had to take my mind off of it.” But when it comes time to shop, Choi has her sights set on the looks from Alexander Wang’s streetwise show. “Don’t tell anyone, but I’m planning on purchasing the entire collection!” says Choi. “I could totally imagine wearing my look in real life. It was my favorite style; it’s literally a spitting image of my own personal style!”
But don’t let her taste for streetwise rock-chick style fool you: Choi is one of modeling’s cool girls, but she isn’t afraid to indulge her geekier side. A fan of comics, RPG games, and binge-watching her favorite anime, Choi spends her off time immersed in her hobbies. “I love video games—especially RPG games with cool graphics. I don’t have any favorites, but I really like League of Legends, Blade & Soul, and Warcraft. RPG games are very popular in Korea!” In addition to games, manga title Nana holds a special place in her heart. “It has inspired my style a lot,” says Choi. “[Nana] is a story about two girls who become best friends when they move in together in Tokyo. One is a singer in a punk rock band and the other is a small-town girl who comes to Tokyo for college and her boyfriend. Both of the girls have the same first name, Nana. The manga follows their lives and chases their dreams—the illustrations are beautiful, and the styling is so cool and very inspirational to me.”

Now traveling the world for work, Choi has picked up a host of new inspirations to add to her list, but nothing beats the pleasures of heading back home—especially when it comes to food. “I really miss the food, of course! Korean food sold in foreign countries is not the same. When I return to Korea, the first thing I want is a home-cooked meal!” With a wealth of work awaiting her back in New York, it may be a while before she gets to revisit Seoul’s cuisine, but for the moment, what Choi’s hungriest for are even more fashion experiences. “My dream is to walk all the shows I have yet to walk. I know this was a great season for me, but I know I have to strive for more. It’s a lot more work than people think, but I am prepared for it!”

The secret is to keep things fresh. Take Korean model Sora Choi, whose personal style recalls a goth-inflected Jane Lane. Flitting around Paris in combat boots and leather jackets, she makes ebony statement lips and a gritty shag haircut look wholly modern, thanks to a youthful flash of skin—shredded fishnets, or the décolleté, highlighted by a spiked collar.

Of course Sora would be there, but honestly didn't think she'd do the show until towards the end of the collection that she was indeed there (given she didn't hint in advance).
