BIOGRAPHY

Steve Hiett is a contemporary and fashion photographer, designer, art director, and musician. Steve Hiett was born in Great Britain in 1940. Hiett studied painting at art school and then went to the Royal College of Art Graphic Design School in 1962 in London, where he became interested in music and worked as a professional musician in 1966, playing in numerous bands until he eventually returned to fashion photography. In 1992 he moved to New York and worked as an art director for G.V.C. and selected fashion magazines. Then in 1994 Steve worked as the Art Director of Arthur Elgort's "Model Manual." He has moved back to Paris and continues to work as a fashion photographer and on his music. Hiett creates a 3D effect in his photographs using a particular format and a combination of colors. The women in his photographs appear to have endless legs and brilliant skin, often combined with luxurious cars or riding bicycles Hiett's work has appeared in magazines such as Nova, Vogue (English, French, and Italian), and Marie Claire. He has also done graphic design, art direction, and directed television commercials for fashion industry clients and publications.

That bio is a bit "lite". Yes, I know it's from his agency webpage but this is a more detailed thumbnail sketch of what he has done and is doing:

Steve Hiett is of course famous for his pioneering fashion and advertising photography. His distinctive work with the Norman Flash method belongs to him in the same way that the 8 x 10” Polaroid format belongs to Paolo Roversi.

Hiett studied his craft at London’s Royal College of Art where he was taught by Anthony Froshaug and appointed Art Director of the RCA’s legendary magazine ARK. After graduating from the RCA, Hiett was the lead guitarist and songwriter with the The Pyramid, known for its avant garde 1967 hit Summer of Last Year. Hiett also played as stand-in with The Pretty Things. Electrocuted on stage by an ungrounded microphone and too traumatised to touch electric instruments for a while, Hiett took up photography and was given his first break by Nova magazine in 1969.

However, Hiett is also rated as one of the top four British graphic designers of the postwar age. Hiett’s graphic design work includes record covers, iconic books for Jean-Baptiste Mondino (Guitar Heroes) and Arthur Elgort (Models Manual). Hiett also designed the Rizzoli book on Vidal Sassoon as well as creating the credits for ‘Vidal Sassoon The Movie’.

More recently, Steve Hiett co-designed the Issue Zero of 7 POST with the equally iconic Harri Peccinotti, who also shot one of the two promotional editions. In addition, Steve Hiett is planning an autobiographical book, which he will, naturally, design.
