Boots With Summer in Their Step
LIKE so many shoe shops this season, Edon Manor in TriBeCa is chockablock with boots: ankle-high, predominantly open-toe, in a range of materials from leather and suede to silk and lace. Davinia Wang, an owner of the boutique, calls them “summer boots,” and even as the temperature rose, they remained among the shop’s best sellers. “For women in the city, boots are a staple,” she said. “It’s hard to imagine living without them, so it’s no surprise that they’ve been making their way into the warmer seasons.”
This season, however, the summer boot has emerged as the must-have shoe, spotted not just on the runways of coveted labels like Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Haider Ackermann and Ann Demeulemeester, but all over town, at all types of affairs, and worn with short cocktail dresses. In the June issue of Vogue, they even appeared on bridesmaids.
“There are certain women who are just over wearing dresses with delicate shoes,” said the designer Alexander Wang, who dressed the model Lara Stone (right, with Mr. Wang) in such an outfit for last month’s Costume Institute gala. “They enjoy the irony of pairing something heavy with something short and sexy.”
Ms. Stone, it ought to be noted, was not alone in her look. A surprising number of stylish women, including Vanessa Traina, Dree Hemingway, Lauren Santo Domingo and Natasha Poly, showed up at that black-tie event in traffic-stopping minidresses, worn with stiletto boots. “I think women have evolved in a way that they are past the days of having to feel super-feminine to be sexy,” Mr. Wang added. “They’re much more confident these days in playing with different proportions and references.”
For Ms. Santo Domingo, who wore a sequined body-con dress with buckled black boots (both from Phi), it’s simply a matter of comfort. “When wearing something really short, one needs something heavy to make a look feel more grounded,” she said. And anything that makes a sequined mini feel more grounded, goes.
