tFS Favorite Editorials of 2010

As we approach the end of the year and based on the suggestion by BerlinRocks to create one general thread for our favorite covers of the year, we have decided to start what we hope will become an annual tradition by creating two open polls (Editorials and Covers) to discuss and nominate our FIVE FAVORITE EDITORIALS Of 2010.

The rules are the following:

• You can post a maximum of 5 Editorials. Only your favorite list will be allowed (no subcategories, please!)
• Only post one image from each editorial with a link to the rest of the images if you found it on tFS.
• If the images are bigger than 160x160, please post them as thumbnails to make sure no one has trouble with page loading.
• Credit the images according to tFS Crediting Rules.
• Do not post direct links to image sources and do not use your own blog as a credit, please.
• Voting ends on February 15, 2010.
• HAVE FUN!

Hmm, there was a shortage of quality editorials this year, at least for my expectations.. too much of the same models (Anja, Abbey, Freja, Anja, Natasha, Abbey, etc), same clothes (Miu Miu embellished dresses, anyone?), photographers like Victor Demarchelier landing all the big gigs and the same concepts over and over.. I barely made it to a 5 and would've happily added some of the gorgeous stories Marie Claire Italia published around the summer as the photography was just too lovely and carefree not to melt even the hearts of more cynical viewers but, not enough space!.

Despite the fantastic stories that surfaced here and there, I think it was a very mediocre year for editorials and new talents.. not only I will insist that a handful of editors-in-chief need to be replaced asap but I am also concerned on the type of magazines we'll be getting in the years to come, it seems the outlet for independent and more avant-garde publications gets tinier and tinier every season.. the magazines that were right on the edge such as 032c and A are moving on a more commercial direction, Mixte is gone, 10 and Muse are devoted to celebrities.. Encens, AnOther and i-D are biannual and not quite the free territority for new talents.. Bon and Grey produce beautiful work but I don't think becoming a platform for experimental new talents is their priority either.. I wonder if next year we'll be seeing more creative editorials and the resurgence of a more individual spirit or, if instead, horrible magazines like Industrie and 25 will continue to reproduce and occupy unnecessary space in the market.

This all sounds very pessimistic but it's one of the reasons why I found this year extremely lackluster, the lack of editorials reflect it.

I love Bal Masqué, Venus in Furs and Water and Oil, but my favorite this year has to be Solve Sundsbo's Vogue Nippon photographs "The Girl From Atlantis". Perfect photography, styling and I can never think of any other model that can rock it other than Alla.
