I had posted an Hassan Massoudy’s calligraphy in the artwork of the day thread and I thought I could be an interesting thread to start.SomethingElse encouraged me to do it !
Share the calligraphies you like, the ones of your country, the ones you wrote, the ones who draw characters, animals, poetics images ; discuss the techniques to write : pencils, quills, brushes, papers, inks, etc..
Some various one I found on the net.

oh awesome. I'm actually taking a class at my university in calligraphy.

do they teach you about the history of it, matthaeus?^

interesting topic!
i like just beautiful handwriting in general
ornamentalpenmanshipsigvg5.jpg

i especially like seeing handwritten letters from Victorian England-- they were so well done. It seems like they were expected of society maybe? I remember as a kid we were taught how to write properly and clearly and in an appealing style (when I was in the Philippines), but in Canada it's not really emphasized I think.. not the schools I went to anyway
my parents and all my aunts from there have very beautiful handwriting...

There are some more examples of the writing and also lessons here :flower:

I want to go to the library now and get some books on penmanship! :p

I had to illustrate a presskit cover for a project of CD about the Celtic culture. The customer wanted a handscripted title, so I had tried to draw it in this illuminated manuscript style.(Customer also liked Neuchwanstein and Loire castles, not really celtic...)Unfortunately this project failed.
The skecth and the printed cover(technique: watercolor, the subtitle "quest..." was added in typography)

I tried taking an East Asian calligraphy course; it is really really hard.

You have to be very steady, its almost like a form of meditation of tai chi. Concentrating but letting everything flow. There are huge competitions in Asia between different calligraphers, and they creat enormous poster/banner size creations. Its really amazing.

This is some of my calligraphy.

^^ Nice videos. Preparing your tools is half the fun of doing calligraphy. I loved preparing the ink on the stone.

^My own calligraphy looked like angry ink blots, lol.
