Dress of the Year

So, in case you didn't know, the Fashion Museum in Bath, England runs every year an exhibition where a certain dress from a certain year is chosen by a certain fashion-industry related person. This year Matthew Schneier from the New York Times is curating. Let me know what you think of the dresses chosed by the critics throughout the years and what choices would you make instead. If I were to choose a dress from the current year, I think I'd go with that Pink-feathered dress from Valentino Haute Couture. (you know, the one Lady Gaga wore).

Most of the selections are actually on point not only in terms of design, but also what the look represented in a greater scheme. But I need to know how Lucy Yeomans settled on Antonio Berardi! Also, no NG x Balenciaga, OG Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin....

Or Demna's Balenciaga, for that matter. I'm not a fan but it's undeniable that his silhouette has influenced fashion tremendously over the last few years.

Actually, yes! If I had to choose one defining Demna look, it would be the one below. We're in yet another season of puffers and voluminous pieces, and the rejuvenation is without a doubt down to him. And the ugly sneaker trend was pushed to the limits by him as well. I would actually ditch that Loewe look in favour of this one.

Looking back I strongly disagree with the selections. When you think of what was Iconic and Influential what they listed seem irrelevant and out of place. I'm not picking based on what is Avant Grade or OTT, but rather pieces that defined the year and the moment. Here are a few examples of alternatives:

Let me start of with my pick for this year.

2018: Valentino

2008: Prada

2009: Dior

yeah.. that gotta be one of my favorite looks of the decade so far! PLUS I love Susie Lau's choice of that Christopher Kane dress. And some actually chose the "We Should All Be Feminists" Look...

I love your selections! Can I get a 2012 and and 2015 looks? :)

I tremendously disagree with most of the selections but everything is a matter of taste. The 90s is extremely misrepresented in my opinion: it should have sexy McQueen, sexy Gucci, chic Mugler, chic Prada, crazy JPG, Yohji or Comme,... and Margiela! We have been living off of his copycats for years now, to forget him completely is beyond my comprehension. Everything looks a bit bourgeois and not at all representative of either the most creative or the most influential.

Laughing at 2017's pick. What have we done to deserve that...

people seem to just have been nominating their friends for this exhibition
céline is missing as well
of the most recent ones i only agree with the prada coat, raf simons' first collection for dior (even though i really don't like it) and maybe craig green.
it's nice seeing that margaret howell look in there and it having been selected by grace coddington

The mannequins that they use are really good. I like how each one is completely different. The 2012 Dior one is quite beautiful as well as 1976.

Those selections are insane!
No Balenciaga, YSL or Valentino in the 60’s?
No Chloe, Rykiel or Halston in the 70’s?
No Alaia, Montana, Sprouse, Mugler or even Versace in the 80’s?
The 90’s selection is almost appalling...

I don’t know if those people experienced the 00’s like us because no Dolce & Gabbana? Balenciaga? YSL by Pilati? Dior by Galliano? No Saint Laurent by Slimane? No Gucci by Michele?

I’m thinking about doing my list..

This list looks irrelevant to me because none of these looks, save for the Jennifer Lopez Versace gown, are/were memorable. Like Lola said, where are some of the designers that totally defined a look, silhouette, mood like Gianni or Valentino or Alaia or Galliano ? Major fail in my eyes.

please do! I'd love to see your selections!

I tried to make a selection before posting it but it's just too difficult for me to choose. Between RTW and Couture, it's insane!
Between what i think was an influencial and important look and just my favorite, it's so hard!
I'm cheating but my dress of 2018 is this one by Celine even if i think that a Valentino Couture dress might be the most influencial...
