Tucked away in the West Village, the Center for Architecture quietly puts together impressive exhibitions of emerging architects and project-specific displays. The Fashion of Architecture explores the fertile interaction between architects and fashion designers exchanging cutting-edge materials and structure for couture tailoring techniques. Contributions include clothing by architects Zaha Hadid, whose buildings consistently push the limits of physics, and Shigeru Ban, known for his innovative use of recyclable materials and multi-function concepts. Also appearing are works by fashion icons such as Yohji Yamamoto and Hussein Chalayan, who reinvent classic apparel through structural innovations. Tying it altogether is Helfand Architecture's installation design, which artfully emphasizes the spatial dynamics of the items on display.

villa K, nagano japan...
This villa is composed of three walls, similar to the villa TCG. One wall, circular, defines the interior space, to which the second-linear-wall is added, defining circulation routes (stairs and a bridge). The third wall is configured as a cylindrical core that forms the service, kitchen, and the bathroom spaces. The center of the cylinder is also the core of the design. The site is relatively flat, but the beautiful mountain scenery is partially blocked from view by the surrounding dense forest. For this reason, the entrance is built on views of the mountains. The three walls and the triangular roof are clearly articulated. The effect is emphasized by natural light streaming in through the glazed openings between the walls and roof. The large window of the living room is aligned with one side of the triangular roof, framing the view the mountain to the east.

CONSTRUCTING the Architecture of Fashion

Galleries: Judith and Walter Hunt Gallery, Mezzanine Gallery, Kohn Pedersen Fox Gallery, HLW Gallery, South Gallery
Architecture is making its presence felt in fashion as the pliable metals, membrane structures, lightweight glasses and flexible plastics used in building construction are creeping on to the catwalks. At the same time, architects and interior designers are borrowing the techniques of pleating and draping from traditional tailoring to design buildings that are interactive, inflatable, and even portable. Works by practitioners such as Zaha Hadid, Winka Dubbeldam, Shigeru Ban, Kivi Sotamaa, David Adjaye, Block Architecture, 6a Architects, Lars Spuybroek, Stuart Veech and Meejin Yoon are showcased alongside architectonic apparel from fashion mavericks such as Martin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Yoshiki Hishinuma, Yeohlee, Pia Myrvold, Yohji Yamamoto, Boudicca, Eley Kishimoto, Kei Kagami, Michiko Koshino, Stéphanie Coudert, Simon Thorogood, Nicola de Main, and Arkadius. The exhibition features a special installation from Paris-based artist Lucy Orta.
