sorry if this is in the wrong forum.
Who do you think is going be iconic in the next few decades, who will be the next karl, or valentino?

Personally, my money is set on a few designers...
Olivier, Doo.Ri, and Giles.

Olivier, Nicholas, Alexander McQueen and Stefano Pilati. I hope they work forever!

On another note, now that you bring it up, I can't even imagine fashion without Karl. I'm dreading the day he drops dead on the catwalk! (We all know he won't die in bed! He'll be working till the last minute!) Anyway, it's completely unimaginable and it will be the saddest day in fashion ever when we lose Karl.

^ i agree.
everyone is going to be absolutely devestated.

I also think Kane has a future in fashion, whether i want to beleive it or not :(

While I admire Karl, do you mind me asking why it would be SO devastating if he were not working any more? I mean what has he done that was really so interesting in the last 10+ years? It really has become a very easy formula. His place as a fashion personality is entertaining, but his design (at least today) is neither unique or revolutionary.

I think alexander is already an icon
oliver and nicolas

His fashion personality is what also makes him an icon along with his design. The fashion industry would miss his wittyness that makes him who he is. It's not always just about the clothes.(As horrible as that may sound, it's true.)

im starting to think its about who backs you. I mean the proenza boys will definately be icons because of valentino's backing, same goes for zac posen. I have no doubt that the proenza boys will be in paris whether its for their own line or for someone elses, and i expect zac posen will one day move to paris.

But there are people who will go under the radar and make it as well. I think Doo.Ri and those behind ThreeasFour have immense ammounts of talents and the fact that they are both up for cdfa is a testament to that.

Another question, who do you think will fizzle out?

when i first read the title, i thought i would read Gareth Pugh or people like that...
but no... all the people you're talking about are, to me, pretty well established...
all supported by the Wintours&Cie.

^unfortunately, that's where i find problems with so-called icons these days....they're usually being dictated by wintour and american vogue. which is why i don't quite understand these questions as there are and have been those that were never as in your face as the YSL's or Dior's or Chanel's. Like Elsa Schiaparelli for example. today,i feel one the most underrated is margiela...compared with the likes of mcqueen, demeulemeester and kawakubo.

for the future my personal picks....definitely zowie and brian of boudicca and bruno pieters(who imo,is a master beyond his years already)....and desiree heiss and ines kaag of bless for their undeniable irreverence and ideas....they shall go down in history for being just that.

Hmm...this is tough.
I don't think Kane has very much talent, so I don't know how long his popularity will last.
I'm afraid Ghesquière might be popular for only this moment. These past two years have been all about him, and this may just be his fifteen minutes. (Though he is really talented.)

Karl will be an icon for his personality alone. Valentino will be forgotten because other than a very specific kind of 40's elegance, he didn't really bring anything to the table. Galliano will probably be remembered in fashion history books as an example of the decadence of our time. Vivienne Westwood is an important character, too. Tom Ford and Hedi Slimane are also big figures.

Elbaz, Pilati, and Theyskens most likely won't be 'icons' because their work isn't groundbreaking, it's just beautiful and timely. I'm undecided on Miuccia, though.

On the editorial side, I think Anna Wintour will definitely be an icon because of her personality. Roitfeld might be remembered for her style, but that's it. I can't think of any revolutionary models, though. Maybe Gemma Ward or Lily Cole or whoever the first 'alien' was.

Bruno Pieters yes yes yes!!!
his ss08 collection was stunning...
his menswear is unbelievable truth...
he IS a Master!

In time I think that Gareth Pugh will be an icon if he continues on the right track. Zac Posen will also be an icon I think. Also I think that Christopher Kane will be an icon. Hopefully some of the others haven't been discovered yet.

Kane might be an icon...however, I heard (rumor, of course) that Donatella is looking for a replacement heir to be the creative director of Versace, and of course she has her eye of Kane, she loves him. If that is true, and Kane gets the job, I think his chances of iconography are much higher than if he were to simply continue on with his own label...he's still very London, I think he needs to move either to Milan or Paris to really become what he can become.
