Now that
Sex and the City is gone, the next generation of fashionistas is turning to Fox's
The O.C. for its fashion fix.
Set in glamorous Newport Beach, Calif., the girls of
The O.C. have deep, designer-laden closets and crave-worthy accessories.
And with such characters as sophisticated and feminine
Marissa Cooper, sexy and scandalous
Summer Roberts and edgy and funky
Anna Stern, the girls deliver the best from across the fashion world, week after week. (You can even check out the Newport Beach trend report on the Web site,
LINK.)
To discover the show's fashion secrets, we got
The O.C.'s costume designer,
Alexandra Welker, to give us the scoop on their brands, stores and styles.
"When I interviewed for the show, the producers said, 'We want this to be a fashion show. We want teens to tune in to see what they're wearing.' It took me by surprise to see how much people have responded to the fashion," Welker says. "It's just thrilling."
Here are ways to get the characters' looks - from the actual brands they wear on the show to look-alike styles you can find in the Valley:
Marissa
(played by
Mischa Barton)
"Marissa is the girl with the completely natural sense of style," Welker says. "She's kind of sophisticated for a teenager. Even if she's wearing something really simple, like a tank top and a cargo skirt, she has something really cool to set it off, like a handbag or an interesting pair of shoes. Marissa's more of a style-setter. You've got a Marc Jacobs jacket, with a T-shirt from the Gap and your favorite pair of Chip & Pepper jeans."
Summer
(played by
Rachel Bilson)
"Summer is a more calculated hottie {ellipsis} more in-your-face sexy," Welker says. "She wears brighter colors, cleavage-enhancing tops. She's a lot more 'Look at me.' She's done a lot of Juicy (Couture), Rock & Republic, Petro Zillia and BCBG (Max Azria) , they always have such wonderful dresses."
