Rising star Tom Sturridge causes a stir at Exchange

Scenes akin to Beatlemania over at the Royal Exchange Theatre - thanks to a starring role from hotly-tipped young actor Tom Sturridge.

Tom, who already has a huge fanbase thanks to his lead role in Richard Curtis movie The Boat That Rocked earlier this year, is causing a frenzy among young fans heading to watch his performance in acclaimed school-set drama Punk Rock.

On one occasion last week, a group of 70 Altrincham schoolgirls even mobbed Tom at stage door.

But Tom is certainly a reluctant heart-throb, and the most modest superstar-in-waiting you are likely to meet.

He tells The Diary he won't even read any of the rave reviews his performance has so far garnered until the role is over, despite many hailing him `a major star in the making'.

He says: "The only thing that matters to me is people enjoy watching the play and that the person who wrote it and directed it feel I've done it justice.

"This has genuinely been the best working experience of my life.

"But I get nervous every single night. This has been my stage debut and I was terrified - but I think it's important to do terrifying things to feel alive."

The play, written by Stockport playwright Simon Stephens, is set in a fictional Stockport school. So for research Tom spent a weekend walking around the town.

He says: "The play talks a lot about the bleakness of Stockport, so I wanted to see it for myself.

"I took a train to Stockport and then walked up to Heaton Moor, and I couldn't believe how beautiful it was."

And as well as falling in love with Heaton Moor, he's rather taken with the Royal Exchange too. He beams: "It's like a spaceship and I really love it - Manchester is so lucky because I think it's just the best theatre."

Hollywood is calling Tom though, and straight after he finishes the run in Manchester he'll be heading over to the States on a promotional tour for the US release of The Boat That Rocked, in which he starred with the likes of Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

But, predictably, Tom's ambitions are also modest.

He says: "I don't have any particular ambitions other than I just want to continue working with people that are better than me, which is pretty much everyone." Bless him!

The Diary's advice is to catch him in Manchester while you can…

Punk Rock is at the Royal Exchange until October 31.

'Pirate Radio' Star Tom Sturridge Snubbed Paul McCartney

British movie hunk Tom Sturridge may have grown up listening to the Beatles but his true allegiance lies more with sports stars than music icons. At the recent London premiere for his film 'Pirate Radio,' which tells the story of a band of DJs broadcasting a British radio station aboard a ship, Sturridge literally brushed Sir Paul McCartney aside to meet his Irish rugby idol.

"During the premiere of 'Pirate Radio,' I met Paul McCartney which was kind of cool," Sturridge tells Spinner. "He tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Hey, loved your film,' but there was this guy at the premiere called Brian O' Driscoll who is the captain of the Irish rugby team. [O'Driscoll] was standing behind Paul and I literally had to push Paul McCartney aside because Brian O' Driscoll is probably one of the greatest heroes of my life! Now Paul doesn't like me and didn't like that, so we're not going to be having dinner together anytime soon. I was a Beatles fan but Irish rugby is very important to me."

Music is also very much a passion for Sturridge, who spends his time checking out new music in London pubs. "In London there's a band called the XX who are my favorite and really good," he says. "I quite like Marcus Foster, Bobby Long. London has amazing music. You can walk into any pub and there will be somebody strumming some crap in the corner."

'Pirate Radio,' which also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Bill Nighy, hits US theaters on Nov. 13.

See the blonde lady. She's their publicist. I think she's also Jude Law's. All three of them are working in NY at the moment but Tom should have a premiere or press stuff that she would need to be there for.

oh, thank you LB!

i think they've known each other since there were photos of tom with sienna few months ago. it must be it.

The Boat That Rocked is coming out in the U.S. finally.

It's called Pirate Radio here which was really frustrating when i was looking for it on imdb.

I'm kind of tired of 60s nostalgia pieces but this one looks like it could be nice.

He looks great here:

The interviewer, no offense to whoever she is, was like, badgering him. She might have been nervous (understandable) but she came off kinda pushy and mean. Esp. cause he's so laid back. He was like falling over his words trying to keep up with her lol.

Oooh and he wants to bring his play to the U.S. I hope that happens.
