Top 10 Underrated Actresses

Mia Maestro for sure. "Alias","Secuestro Express", "Motorcycle Diaries", "For love or Country", and now the big remake of "The Poseidon", she is a wonderful actress. She should definetly get her more respect in America.

I think that all of these are underrated in various ways (artistically, in terms of popular attention, or other reasons) and some of their best performances that I base this on

Romala Garai (Vanity Fair, I Capture the Castle, Nicholas Nicholby)
Patricia Clarkson (Pieces of April, Far From Heaven, The Station Agent, Dogville)
Claire Danes (Igby Goes Down, Romeo+Juliet, Stage Beaty, Brokedown Palace)
Miranda Richardson (The Hours, Spider,The Rage in Placid Lake, Enchanted April)
Emmy Rossum (The Phantom of the Opera, Songcatcher, Passionada, Mystic River)
Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Howard's End, Much Ado About Nothing, Dead Again)
Rose Byrne(I Capture the Castle, The Rage in Placid Lake, City of Ghosts)
Samantha Morton (In America, Code 46, Dreaming of Joseph Lees)
Sarah Polley (My Life Without Me, Guinevere, The Sweet Hereafter, The Life Before This)
Marion Cotillard (A Very Long Engagement, Love Me If You Dare)

Gillian Anderson
I use to watch her on the X-Files all the time. '
My addition is Evan Rachel Wood. Shes been in an appropriet amount of movies, but I still don't understand how these other actresses, who don't have any talent, purely my opinion, keep getting bigger roles then her. Woah, run on sentence:blush:

A brief rundown of their picks, in no particular order:

Sarah Polley
Toni Collette
Thandie Newton
Madeleine Stowe
Laura Dern
Diane Venora
Gillian Anderson
Patricia Arquette
Jennifer Jason Leigh
Barbara Hershey

Any thoughts or additions?

There's so many underrated actors in hollywood (and plenty of overrated ones.. but thats another story), so I agree with most on this list.

One person I'm familiar with is Thandie Newton though.. she's a great actress and she was supposed to make it big after being in MI2 and then Beloved (we all know how that turned out..).. she was great in her debut with Kidman in "Flirting" and I also thought she was great in "The Truth About Charlie"... too bad Marky Mark Whalberg totally ruined the movie with his bad acting :yuk: .. well to finish it up I love Thandie.. and she is beautiful also  ...

I really agree with Toni Collette, have loved her since Muriels Wedding (You're TERRIBLE Muriel!!!! )

Not to mention Velvet Goldmine :)

^ I agree with Tony Collette too. I'll add Emily Watson.

(Breaking the waves, Punch drunk love, The Boxer, Gosford Park,Angela's ashes)

Totally agree with the emily watson recommendation.

Was so excited to see Sarah Polley on that list (and the msn frontpage)...am I the only one who loved her in Road to Avonlea?!!

Agree completely with those  And in the original list Sarah Polley and Toni Collette :flower:

I'd also add the following, since I think that they are often under rated / under-appreciated in proportion to their talent

Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake ; Sense and Sensibility ; Shakespeare in Love)
Lindsay Duncan (Under the Tuscan Sun ; Mansfield Park)
Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda ; Dirty Pretty Things)
Shirley Henderson (The Way We Live Now ; Dirty Filthy Love ; Bridget Jones Diary)
Parminder Nagra (Bend It Like Beckham ; Ella Enchanted  )
Kelley MacDonald (Intermission ; Gosford Park ; The Girl in the Cafe)
Laura Fraser (Left Luggage ; Iron Jawed Angels)
Dinara Drukarova (Since Otar Left ; Pensee Assise)
Eva Green (The Dreamers ; Kingdom of Heaven)
Sophie Thompson (Persuasion ; Emma ; Gosford Park)

Franka Potente. In the mainstream she has only been in the Bourne Identity movies. In English indie there was Run,Lola Run.

But I've seen her in a number of absolutely stunning German movies...she rocks!!!

Great pick, she is a terrific actress  :flower: I think it's a shame that although some of these actresses might be popular for their mainstream work, the truly wonderful films they make are often overlooked :(

She was awesome in X-Files (especially in eps like All Souls, Milagro, etc), but check out House of Mirth with Anthony LaPaglia. She is magnificent. Definitely underrated, for that performance alone.

When I think of "underrated" actresses, I usually think Gillian Anderson, Ludivine Sagnier, Connie Nielsen, Lynn Whitfield, off the top of my head.

Edited to add that I absolutely agree with Franka Potente. I love Lola, but her performance in The Princess and the Warrior was one of the best I've ever seen.

And oh! Maggie Gyllenhaal. Since she didn't get an Oscar for Secretary, I absolutely consider her underrated.

Julia Roberts (just kidding :D)

Maggie Gyllenhaal.

I totally agree with Jennifer Jason Leigh. She should have at least been nominated for an Oscar for "Georgia."
