Top Stylists

This is such an inside-y topic, and being a non-fashion professional, just someone who likes great photography, i have to say the stylists that are the best are the ones who don't make something look really contrived, as in, super-obviously styled. The styling should flow with the photographer, the clothes, and the models.

meh...i don't really agree with that fox in the snow...

if i want to see something that looks really natural...
i'll just take a walk outside...i don't need to buy a magazine for that...

when it comes to fashion...i am looking for fantasy...
and the pics i like best are the ones that don't look 'real'...
but more like a fairytale or a dream...
the ones that focus on the clothes....
where everything...the girl, hair and make up, location, lighting, etc...
is all there to enhance the CLOTHING...

the FASHION...

I agree with you Soft.

I also noticed from reading page 1, that there seems to be a misconception about stylists, since everyone does seem to be uber-obsessed with celebs, and that is this:

That stylists are in place to create wardrobes for clients.
I don't think most people realize that it takes a team of people to put together an editorial in order to achieve a vision....

Not all stylists treat the job like Rachel Zoe - they do not recieve their merit through the A-B-C-D-Listers who they dress. It is about their magazine work and the art they help create.

I love learning about stylists - give me more, give me more...

I don't really mean that it should look 'natural' but I also don't think it should look stagey. I think a lot of stylists get so caught up in a 'vision', particularly in high fashion editorials, that you can barely see the clothes! That is what I mean - I don't think it's unfair to say this is a problem. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at an editorial and had to strain to make out the detail of an outfit because there are too many elements added by a stylist. I think this also probably has something to do with the way it is shot/directed, but I know that sometimes styling gets in the way of telling a fashion story, rathter than a fantasy concoction of an over-exuberant stylist. Sometimes, the desire to be artistic gets in the way of the star, which should be the CLOTHES, not the ego of a stylist trying to hard to put some kind signature on something.

hey soft...agree with you....and about fox in the snow i understand what u say but because of that is that its called high fashion...the clothes of course are the pretext to create a mood,an atmosphere...sometimes u show the whole outfit sometimes u dont...it depends...thats the wonderful about fashion...u could take different approach and none of them are bad....
