Topshop Unique S/S 06 London

TOPSHOP UNIQUEFrom Camilla Morton, in London

"THE response has been staggering,' smiled Jane Shepherdson as guests arrived at the hotly anticipated Topshop UNIQUE show, though she admitted it was very nervewracking to be sitting not on sponsor, but showing side. No expense had been spared on the LFW debut of the 'edgier' or, to quote the programme notes, "progressive" range. Champagne flowed, white marquees had been erected in Berkeley Square, big name models had been drafted in not only for the runway but to sit front row, such as Erin O'Connor and Liberty Ross, alongside Zoe Ball, Sara Cox, Jemina Khan and Zandra Rhodes - the eclectic mix of faces as diverse as the customer the cult highstreet label reaches. Not unlike its Oxford Circus flagstreet store, the set, with its pine wood raw runway and rigging, looked like something from a pop festival, and indeed the music was a mix of up-to-the-minute (as you would expect a trendy young things taste to be), and classic catwalk tracks like Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance to keep the more conditioned of us happy. When the show eventually settled down to start - not entirely their fault as a delay of an hour-and-a-half had built up over a day of too-ing and fro-ing - the anticipation was palpable. Crisp white - just like Giles, so bang on trend - underlined silhouettes that were stark and crisp. A ruffle collared white dress was a shade of YSL moment past. With greys and jersey that hinted Helmut Lang, the collection worked through trenches, jumpsuits, minis and dresses to give a broad taste of all you could expect for spring. The possibilities were endless, the drapes and cuts were superior to what you would expect of the high-street, but for many the joy of the high street is rummaging and browsing through the options, so to put them on the runway slightly takes away from the triumph of your own clever discovery. Unique, designed by Nick Passmore, proved that Topshop was more than capable and able to sit alongside the big names of the runway, but begged the question why would you want it to?

sorry all my pics are credited to vogue.co.uk and this review is from Vogue too.

I also saw the Helmut-ism of this collection but not the YSL influence but now that its pointed out I see that too.

Thanks for posting, Zazie and helena. I agree that it is very Helmut, which I like. I'd wear a lot of it. Does anyone know what the price points will be like?

Would love to see pics of the front row. Susie, same as you, I tend to shop topshop boutique (though i don't see the unique stuff too often...no idea why, clearly it's always out of my line of sight) and their mainline for basics but their quality in general is much higher than H&M, can't comment on mango (as i don't own anything from them).

droogist - someone on TV this morning said the price point is the same as 'Whistles' (if you know that) - dresses prob £120-180, coats £200-ish, skirts £80-100....that skind of range I think. Which is great I think! Its so exciting to have directional clothes sold on our high street - makes a change fom the constant dirge of boho-sienna-a-like clothes.

Meg - I saw pics of the front row....Laura Bailey next to erin o'connor both looking VERY lovely! Unfortunately you an't get Topshop Unique in the provincial stores.

those prices sound quite high to me...with the dollar being what it is...

:ermm:

Hmmm I suppose but the quality is supposed to be much better than topshop....I guess thats similar to Reiss prices....I think the prices are ok (subject to quality of course).

I am loving everything I've seen from those pics. Is there any indication when it will be available in stores? I have a lot of the boutique stuff, but I agree with what has been mentioned about unique being harder to find. Although both Newcastle and Metrocentre are good sized branches neither has a separate boutique section, usually they just get random items from each collection and they are dotted around the fixtures -v annoying.

Maybe this unique range will be available online? they do quite an extensive range of the boutique stuff online...

*Also I'm assuming the shoes used were also topshop yes?? They look GREAT!

does anyone know who the designers are for the seperate outfits...?

I love the first outfit from post 14# and the first from post 15#

what a surprise! This was the only London show so far that I liked. Many wearable pieces - and it's nice that they give credit to all of their design team.

The price line is along the lines of most diffusion lines and I heard it will be sold only in the London store

I love most of the pieces!
Too bad I can't get it here in the States, looks like I need to plan a trip :innocent:

admittedly, the jersey dresses are lovely and look GORGEOUS on those models, but.... how many customers actually have the body to wear them, i wonder??

The whole collection will be available at Oxford Street London. But they'll sell a small selection in stores nationwide. I should think that they'll sell some online as well.

I've been reading all the reviews in the papers and they're all saying the price range is £30-£100 of all the pieces. Come on, it's still Topshop prices! Even their designer diffusion lines aren't as expensive as £200 for a coat.

totally right mishahoi!!!

I like the dresses the most..especially the grey jersey one and the white dress with the ruffles. I hope the quality is decent though for those prices.

I wonder if Topshop will sell it via their site as well ?

^ I hope so...well they have a boutique section which is pretty well stocked at the moment, msybe it will be part of that
