Beauty and the Beach
MODEL TORI PRAVER—NO STRANGER TO THE BEACH OR SWIMWEAR—IS THE ESSENCE OF HER LAID-BACK HAWAIIAN ROOTS.
Twenty-two-year-old IMG model and surfer Tori Praver has a good life and an even better attitude. Living by a “seize the day” credo—she has if not now, when? tattooed underneath her breast—Praver launched a booming modeling career at the age of 17 and now designs a successful eponymous swimwear line. Ultimately gracing multiple covers from Glamour to Cosmopolitan, Praver began with a bang as the face of Guess, just as supermodel greats Claudia Schiffer and Eva Herzigova did.
She’s also familiar with the fame that comes with appearing in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue (2007–2009). During her 2008 shoot for the magazine the editor of the issue encouraged her to pursue bikini design, then featured her work in the 2009 installment. “Designing was a dream I’ve had ever since I was a little girl,” says Praver. “I had drawers—literally drawers—full of bikinis, and that was something I had always wanted to do.”
If one was to describe Praver in surf lingo, she’d be “bombin’” or “buttery”— divine in many ways, which is probably due to her upbringing in Maui and subsequent world travel. “I had the dream childhood: growing up on a beach, always in a bikini, surfing every day,” she says. “I’ve never competed but I was on my high school surf team.” Today Praver lives in Venice Beach with her boyfriend of three years, fellow Hawaiian and professional surfer and photographer Danny Fuller (who just exhibited in Wainscott two weeks ago). But she comes to New York City—where she met Fuller and where she keeps an apartment—and Montauk periodically, as well as jaunting to Europe for work and occasionally to memorable spots like Bali and Iceland.
Wise beyond her years, Praver hopes to someday purchase her dream home in her native Hawaii and land steady work for years to come—with a healthy dose of wave time, of course. “Surfing, it’s my biggest passion,” she says. “I love traveling to certain parts of the world to surf. I’ve surfed all around the world.” Praver also acts philanthropically, sponsoring two children, one in Bangladesh and one in Nepal, through Save the Children (“I love to write them letters,” she says) and devoting time to Project Sunshine, which helps families and children with medical needs. “I go and visit children in hospitals and help them see a happier side of life,” she says. “It’s really a cool organization.”
As for her own life, Praver sticks to an active regimen—yoga, Pilates, bike riding and (naturally) surfing—and, for the most part, adheres to a healthy diet full of veggies (“I still love my ice cream and my junk food,” she adds. “It’s hard to stay away from it!”) Her number-one beauty tip? Always wear a lot of sunscreen. “I love Weleda, which is a natural line,” she says. “And Éminence Organic Skin Care has great organic products.” When in the Hamptons, Praver stays at her favorite haunt, the Montauk Yacht Club, and suns on her favorite beach, Ditch Plains. She loves dining at the organic eatery Joni’s in Montauk and shopping at Steven Alan, where her swimsuits can be found. But the real draw is the long-boarding.
“Montauk has a really fun break to long-board,” she says. “It’s a long, mellow wave. I have a really fun time surfing there. It gets a little crowded these days, though. In the summertime it’s quite the hot spot as far as surfing goes. Montauk has a rad little surf-town vibe. I like how quiet and quaint it is.”
