I think US HB did it better. The way this is cropped makes it feel slightly awkward and uncentered. And I don’t like that they title text is running across her head instead of behind it.
This image has too many layers going on - the foreground is a hand that's out of focus, behind that comes the rest of Rihanna, and then in the distance, there's a landscape. The white clothing is so indistinct, I'm not sure whether it's a shirt or a bedsheet.
There's an art to creating a cover shot, there has to be... what I could best describe as a 'sophisticated level of simplicity' about it.
Yikes, not only does the colours clash, but that art direction is way too scattered. One of Rihanna's least flattering covers and I'm not exactly looking forward to reading about her.
Usually the UK edition would use their own cover for September and keep the reprint as an extra. I've always liked that idea.
It's time for them to hire a new EIC! We need direction, a point of view. Really doubt whether this will appear to the Harper's reader, but it may court readers Vogue and Elle.
I despise global deals. At least shoot enough content that allows you have a different cover per country.
In a world where magazine content ends up digitally available around the globe it seems so counter productive. If ever there was a reason to not buy a physical magazine it’s a global deal.
^Me too, especially when the likes of Rihanna feels so completely out of left field for a magazine like British Harper's Bazaar. There is no way we would've had Rihanna this month, if not for the global deal.
Out the two covers, the subscribers with the Bottega Veneta coat feels more suited to British Bazaar's aesthetic (the glimpse of the idyllic landscape as the backdrop and the vibrant blue sky) - as opposed to the first which feels cold and minimal in comparison. The cropping and choice of font colours is also questionable in the newsstand cover (American Bazaar did this cover image more justice, IMO).
A few magazines have hiked up to £5. Elle Decoration did it a few months back. Very rarely is the content in either titles worth that.
Rihanna did HB UK is a bit of a curve ball indeed. Their average readership age used to be 45+, so I can’t imagine she’s of much interest. Nor her skincare line, but you never know!
My subscription arrived today and I received the exact cover from #1.
The cover with the Bottega Veneta coat is the export/international alternative, and therefore there is no special subscribers cover this month which I'm a little deflated by - loved the Bottega cover and whoever wrote the caption for Bazaar's IG was misinformed.
