US Elle August 2008 : Mariah Carey by Alexei Hay

Elle Editor's Letter:

Power Chord

I first met Mariah Carey 10 years ago at a party we threw for her on the occasion of her appearance on the cover of Mirabella. It was an intimate dinner of 50 -- and it being my party, I naturally seated her next to me. She was convivial, polite, and every so often she seemed to escape into her own world, sitting quietly with a dreamy look on her face, and sort of singing under her breath. It was thrilling! That voice! Even at a quarter decibel, I could still hear the rich, multioctave, crystal-clear quality that moved her recent single "Touch My Body" to the top of the charts.

Mariah has a lot to sing about: In addition to the record she just broke -- more No. 1 singles than Elvis -- there is her recent marriage to the supercute Nick Cannon, a star of, among other things, the best movie ever, Drumline, which is played on TNT so often they should just give it its own dedicated channel.

Mariah is a notorious night owl, and unfortunately I had to leave the shoot at 1:30 A.M., after Joe Zee and photographer Alexei Hay had completed just the first shot. Had I stayed, I would have gotten to meet Nick, who showed up at three and gamely posed with his new bride. Mariah sits down with writer Dan Crane (after midnight, of course), who finds a woman very much at home in the world and with herself, displaying an easy confidence and wicked sense of humor that is not usually part of her public image.

Mariah has been famous for her entire adult life, and she understands the vicissitudes and requirements of stardom well.

Argh:yuk:

Why, Why, Why I subscripe Elle US after MK Olsen issue?
WHY??????????????????????????????????????????????????

:(

I wish Mariah would give up those poses. She's been recycling them since the Honey album..argh...

Fashion magazines are supposed to be aspirational above all else right?

With that in mind, what sensible, chic, flesh and blood grown woman would want to aspire to be Mariah Carey?

She's a prime example of how not to grow up gracefully.

Trashy! That cover looks like it was taken in 1998. But what else would one expect from US Elle?

she's just not photogenic..as she's proved to us before. but i personally think she's very beautiful. but the cover clearly isn't good & the picture with her and the guy, she looks like she's about to take a bite out of his face

Good cover for Mariah, she really cannot do any better.

:angry::sick::angry::yuk::yuk::yuk::yuk:She looks like Amy Fisher, the infamous Long Island Lolita. I'm so pissed about this. I'm going to write in, and I never had a reason for that.

AHAHAHAAHAHA
I could go on laughing for hours just looking at this

I can not agree more with all of the comments above. It looks like a Cosmo cover, not Elle! You know its bad when they have their covergirl pose in trashy lingerie- oh, I'm sorry, thats a Gucci bikini! Seriously, all of those outfits look like they came from Forever21. But thats Mariah for you!

when has mariah carey done a photoshoot without a bikini shot? never!
she's so predictable...

I actually like that one, and the cover - she somehow looks less posey and just IS. I like that....B) There's just something in her eyes and her smile that is appealing ;) Obviously, she's showing off her body...it's predictable, but she at least seems genuinely happy these days.

Well I definitely can't say that I am shocked by the majority of the comments. After all it is Mariah and just the mere mentioning of her name brings forth such :shifty: negativity. Anyways, everyone is entitled to their opinion. As for mine...I like the cover, the accompanying photoshoot and the interview.

Mariah is 38 and looks great. She seems genuinely happy and I'm happy for her. She's never been a Fashionista nor has she ever tried to be and really she doesn't need to do the continuous reinventions since it has been her talent that has made her successful for 18 (+) years not how she poses, what she wears or doesn't wear et cetera. The folks at Elle clearly thought she was worthy of their cover and that is why she is on it. B)

I like how the photoshoped her waist.......................not.

 omg. don't like this at all. Looks so trashy!
