US Elle September 2014 : Kristen Stewart by Michael Thompson

Photographically this girl is so dead behind the eyes, so vacant and surly looking. I also couldn't care any less about what she has to say either, it's a mystery to me that we're still seeing her around now Twilight is done!

My thoughts exactly!

...please put someone more relevant on the cover who actually came up with a new movie/show etc.

4 movies this year, she's pretty relevant

- Anesthesia
- Still Alice
- Clouds of Sils Maria
- Camp X-Ray

Okay my bad but I don't think she is so relevant on the fashion scene. She might be active with movies etc. but other than being a Lagerfeld muse she is forever the dead-eyed actress for me. I'd rather pay a visit to morgue than getting my hands on this cover. p.s. the editorial is pretty predictable, any backstage/behind the scenes photo of Chanel supermarket IS better than this spread in full.

^she is relevant to the fashion scene, she´s the face of Chanel Pre Fall 2014 and Balenciaga Rosabotanica fragrance. of course she is not of everyone´s taste but the same can be said (and is often said) about other actresses.

Awful cover, with really bad styling and, as usual, Kristen giving the same face as in every single photo every taken of her.

I am fully aware of her relevance as in holding prestigious contracts with Chanel and Balenciaga. I didn't let my own personal preferences get in the way of making an objective comment about her cover. Her "relevance" is limited to a ghastly shot Chanel Pre-Fall ad (the collection was greatly criticized for being offensive to Native Americans) and a fragrance campaign. Designers' choice of actresses to front their own campaigns doesn't always translate to the masses 100%. She doesn't hold much impact on public like her fellow actresses do, which was the gist of my objection.

Not enough text

I wish she was shot with her newer short hair.

I agree with you on this point, that´s why I don´t like her on the September cover but -imo- to say she´s irrelevant (either in movies or fashion) is a quite inaccurate statement.

I actually really like the cover and Kristen has always been a good seller so it makes sense that she end up on the September cover. I have high hopes for her as an actress and hopefully she can leave twilight behind her and just move forward. The editorial is really cool as well, i love that they incorporated so much from the Chanel show.

Sadly Michael Thompson shot this...he (and Elgort) really shouldn't be working for Elle at their level and this embarrassingly low-quality work is ample proof why. I've never claimed to enjoy his celebrity portraiture across the board but this is Testino level s**t; no effort was put into the cover or editorial. Sad, because this is also Joe Zee's last cover and probably the last time we'll see print work from him for a while.

Wow this is really bad for Michael Thompson... Elle should let him do work the caliber of his prolific W work - he would be an excellent 'get' for them to frequently use. Model editorials too!

Joe Zee sucked balls!! Can anyone name one good edit he has produced?! All of Elle's edits just blend into one another not because they're similar but because none are memorable.

^ I liked some of his fashion eds...to be honest Joe really tried to push Elle in a more exciting, editorial direction; it just didn't really pan out in the long run unfortunately. I still feel that his reputation and the high quality of his earlier, more directional work precedes him, no doubt.

I don't mind the girl, but I feel like I've seen all this before, so it's not having much impact on me for a September cover story.

bleh whatevs about her. the only slight connection i feel to Kristen is her love of the 80s alt-punk band Husker Du.

But I see that the hair tuck trend has stuck and has hit the mainstream. and just so you all know the eternally cool Francoise Hardy so rocked this look before Kristen and these runway model newbs were but a twinkle in their parents eyes, if that

Joe Zee's as EIC of ELLE sadly did not translate or WOW me the way his editorial styling and seemingly endless encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture and fashion references which infused his wonderfully eclectic and imaginative work during his W magazine years. his styling contributions made early 2000 W magazine such a visual and tactile feast which made US VOGUE pale in comparison.

Looking through our editorial archives, one can still feel that buzz and energy from those W magazine editorials. Wish he and his team could've captured and re-created that same level of creativity and WOW factor at ELLE...

Anyone know where he's going next?

Joe is headed to Yahoo to serve as EIC of their fashion vertical & digital magazine should be very interesting. Digital content is clearly the next frontier and if done right it could be amazing. Can't wait to see what is done in terms of editorial imagery when you have the freedom to make the fashion moving, shop-able and interactive.
