US Marie Claire May 2016 : The Fresh Faces Issue by Tesh

It's Marie Claire's third-annual May Fresh Faces issue, our spotlight on some of the most exciting up-and-coming talents today. Here, and being fêted at our Fresh Faces party at Los Angeles' Sunset Tower hotel tonight, five women who are changing the game.

Kylie Jenner

On learning more details surrounding her dad's transition along with the rest of the world in his Diane Sawyer interview: "I've always known. It was a secret we just couldn't talk about."

On her ability to influence others and have fun with it: "I started wigs, and now everyone is wearing wigs. Kim [Kardashian] just used my wig guy last night...I just do whatever I want to do, and people will follow."

On posting photos on social media: "When I post sexy photos, I always regret it. Like, Oh my God, everyone is seeing my body. I get really weird about it."

Zendaya

On why she returned to Disney: "A big reason why I wanted to come back to Disney is because I saw a lack of diversity on the channel. To see a black family, to see a young girl with these adorable Afro puffs…little things like that are so important."

On going to the Grammys after-party with her dad and New York Giant, Odell Beckham Jr.: "If a guy can handle my dad the first time, then he's worth giving my time to. If he can't, then I might as well not waste my time. Just because they're in the NFL doesn't mean they get a pass."

On not worrying about what other people think: "I wore a freaking mullet to the Grammys. I felt like I was killing it. And I was. That's all that should matter when you step out."

Hailey Baldwin

On dating Justin Bieber: "I don't want attention out of dating somebody. Texts started coming through, crazy phone calls...it's hard to date somebody in this industry. You have to have really thick skin and be very strong. You have to focus on the person and nothing else."

On her feelings: "I'm the type of person where I let things slide. I push it to the side. And then finally explode every so often, but by myself. I've been in situations with friends [when] someone will have said something that really hurt my feelings, so I sit there choking tears back."

Ellie Goulding

On teaching herself guitar by listening to her favorite performers: "I loved Pearl Jam…and of course, Björk, my all time hero. [But] It wasn't like I was going to become a famous singer—that didn't ever seem like a reality or an option."

On being a star: "I don't feel like I'm a very good pop star. I can be painfully shy, and I don't really talk much between songs. I don't feel like I'm a natural performer."

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

On other acting roles she would love to take on: "I've always had Cleopatra on my list. I'd also love to play Rosa Parks. There's definitely a story about her to be told."

On Will and Jada Pinkett Smith speaking out on the lack of diversity at the Oscars: "[They took] A very brave stand." But she points out, "That's the end of the race. The root of it is about having many, many stories told and having the people who hold he purse strings tell diverse and inclusive stories. It's got to go back to how films get green-lit in the first place."

On shying away from the spotlight and social media: "Call me old-fashioned, but if there were ever a massive volcanic eruption like there was in Pompeii and, hundreds of years later, people looked at us as a species with our selfie sticks, they would think, God were we the most narcissistic culture ever?"

Oh my goodness I actually smiled when I saw that Kylie cover! It's everything I need for Spring. I like the mood. I love the carefree feel to it. I love how it feels so natural. Her best cover to date. I might actually buy this. She's a beautiful woman. My only issue here is how she resembles Kendall so much here

Gugu's cover is also beautiful. Love the attitude.

Zendaya is a gorgeous woman who hasn't had a decent cover as of late. Stop experimenting (i.e. That hair). Show her for her. Her cover could have been stunning if it weren't for that heavy hair. My goodness.

The other 2, meh.

Yeah kylie's cover is soo good! I like it and also her preview shot is good.

I think that Kylie´s cover is the best, I prefer her styling and pose/expression over the rest.

Honestly f**k them for featuring an incredibly talented and elegant girl like Gugu on the cover with girls like Kylie Jenner and that obnoxious pouty Baldwin girl. But at least she looks the best and slays them all.

F**k them too for that hair and light skin on Zendaya.

I like Ellie's music but unfortunately she really can't take a good shot with that face.

They should've just stuck with the first three covers and ditched the other two (even though the five covers make sense for the sake of variety and diversity). Kylie has photographed wonderfully, absolutely love the styling of Zendaya's cover and I've always thought Hailey Baldwin takes a decent picture. Kudos Marie Claire!

Elie's cover is the worst. It suprise me but Kylie looks quite fresh and young here.

These are incredible. Kylie's cover is my favorite, the girl does no wrong for me.

I feel offended on Gugu's behalf that she is sharing a cover with the likes of Jenner and Baldwin. Seriously, "I started wigs?" This girl is delusional and talentless and a horrible role model - my 12 year old cousin just asked for her lip kit and I nearly cried.

Right? The hell she mean by "i started wigs"?! Kylie ain't no "fresh face" other than the fresh fillers injected in her skin. Notice Zendaya and Gugu were the only ones talking about real issues other than "ZOMG so you dated this guy?! OMG you have this many followers?!".

None of them are good, embarrassing.

How did that photo of Kylie ever get chosen? All I see is cheesy mediocrity on all levels and I'm sort of shocked tbh. I get that culture and fashion have changed and all that but SERIOUSLY? I mean, she really looks like a young, dopey teen here. Sigh.

Oi, the rage!

Have to admit, Kylie's cover looks the best of the lot, and aesthetically it's a nice line-up, but why put Gugu and Elle next to the terrible three? And the tragedy of the situation is that Gugu and Ellie's covers actually looks terrible.

The previous 'fresh faces' covers featured actual up-and-coming starlets with films and projects in tow. What does Hayley and Kylie, and to some degree Zendaya, bring to the table? Social media followers??

They also really need to pay attention to their art direction!!

'That' face is a bit mean. Ellie's a talented, beautiful girl in my opinion. She doesn't have the most stereo typically beautiful face, granted, but she is none the less, a beautiful girl. I like that she's out there to represent a different kind of look and body-type too.

I literally could not love Kylie's comments about wigs more. She definitely made them happen, they were so not even a thing before she popped one on her head.

Zendaya has her own television show KC Undercover on Disney.

i guess Kylie is sort of a fresh face...I mean it's not the face she was born with so it's about as fresh as its gonna get.

In general I hate all these covers just about as much as I hate the cover subjects.

Zendaya is the only one who has anything remotely interesting or worthwhile to say when she opens her mouth but for the life of me I don't know what she does for a living?? Is she an actress (in what??) is she a singer? (Of what??)
