Such a great issue, so very 50s: Rutledge and Bouché are on fire! Thank you!
 
Bouché is so underrated compared to another Rene...maybe because Gruau had better connection with the House of Dior.

Yes for a time Gruau was even the Art Director for Dior, but also Gruau is certainly more stylised or 'graphic'. I think Bouché has more soul. Also Bouché's style evolved over his career whereas Gruau retained his clean style.

Interesting fact, Bouché was actually German, or rather Austro-Hungarian, born in Prague. His birth name was Robert August Buchstein and he was already earning a living from drawing aged 15. He only adopted the René Robert Bouché when he moved to Berlin in his early 20s. Fashion illustration was his bread and butter nut his real love was portraiture and after he moved to America in 1938 he earned most of his money from portraits of famous celebrities, including a beautiful one of Jackie Kennedy.
