US Vogue February 1984 : Shari Belafonte by Richard Avedon

What exactly was the creative/marketing/strategic logic behind casting Shari for the cover only to not have a single trace of her throughout the magazine (while the contents are dominated by Kim. Just so random)??? It was common practice back then, and they followed this template over and over. I’m just racking my brain trying to understand the marketing decision for such a weird practice… Were readers not turned off to see someone they may have liked on the cover only to find that-- that’s it: Just the cover and nowhere else in the content? The coverline even has “Jane Fonda: A Special Interview” LOL ...So very odd…

Vogue was NOTORIOUS for pull that! Was so frustrating seeing some of these great covers of the models and zero content of them inside.
