i just read both tina brown + grace mirabella's book, im very thankful to TFs for letting me looking through a lot of the issues mentioned.. it's funny how the michaela cover feels sooo modern but the inside story is very dated, the lacroix with jeans works but the rest is SO 80's in a way u can't imagine ever returning, the wayne masser colors story feels very us vogue circa 2006 ish, and beautiful -- between that story and the cover u really get a vibe of anna's vision for vogue and why she had success even through some very drab and bad times for the fashion industry

Yes, since this was Anna Wintour's first issue she clearly wanted to make an impact with the cover to announce that she had arrived. It was radically different to the (mostly) Avedon covers of the last 15 or so years.
Peter Lindbergh had only worked for US Vogue sporadically (as a 'Paris' photographer) and not for 4 years. Anna Wintour wanted to make a break with all the photographers who had been Vogue US staples for Grace Mirabella.
