US Vogue November 2022 : Michaela Coel by Malick Bodian

Wish they use a full body shot for the cover. This looks festive and I wanna see the whole dress.

LOVE love love this.

So here for this and so here for her arrival on a Vogue cover. She looks beautiful and I actually love how bold it looks.

Ooh I love this! Great to see Michaela land a major cover. Love the composition and colours, it’s so vibrant but still feels right for autumn.

Excited to see more shots from the story - this might be the first US Vogue I buy since Lorde’s cover last year.

I thought she would make her Vogue debut with British Vogue. Well Edward had that chance so many times (i.e. should've given her the cover during the "I May Destroy You" era) but hey, I don't mind this. She would always photograph well because of her modelesque features. I just wish the composition was better arranged. Something about the cropping doesn't look right. Like it's supposed to be either all the way zoomed in or a bit more zoomed out.

I like that the color pops, also love that the editorial is full of energy. Kudos to Ibrahim & Malick

I love everything about the cover+editorial... the styling, the colors, the textures, the poses  a return to form for US Vogue

I have a suspicion that Letitia could've gotten this solo cover had she not been known as an anti-vax. Anna had probably planned to feature someone from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for November but:
a) Lupita has been chosen way too many times
b) Letitia's Anti-Vax stance is still fresh on people's minds. Despite being the lead, focusing the promotion of the film on her would be a high risk
c) Angela is probably considered too old for Anna because to her, Meryl Streep is the only 60+ actress worth featuring on a cover.
d) Danai is probably perceived as not that known by the public (we all know Anna wouldn't take such a risk nowadays unless it's for a white, British actress)

So she ended up with Michaela.

Interesting that she didnt do British Vogue

I feel as though she must have a UK magazine lined up, since she wasn't on the UK Elle cover with her costars. Perhaps UK Vogue did or will do a separate shoot with her? Tatler? No idea. She also seems to have almost nothing in the works in terms of film/TV, which seems odd to me and makes me think there's some secret project, or that perhaps her Black Panther character is a more notable one than the marketing would suggest and she's committed to future films/tv work with Marvel.

I love this. Quintessential US Vogue for me.

Wish there were more text!

I don't see it that way. To me, Michaela is the obvious choice because she seems like the exact kind of person Anna would respect and want to highlight, and many here have been suggesting she was a likely cover subject for the last year or so. She wrote a piece for the September 2021 issue of American Vogue and is part of Vogue's Forces of Fashion summit later this month. Danai is far better known to the American public than Michaela, since she was on a massively popular show here for twelve years and was in the first Black Panther movie as well as two of the Avengers movies, three of the most successful films in history.

Happy for her! She looks great as always. Would've liked to see her Vogue debut by Meisel but the results look great and authentic.

Yeah, but Danai's roles in those Marvel movies are more supporting. Hence, the "perceived as not that known" assumption on my part. She hasn't really had a lead role in a major project that has garnered massive conversations like Michaela did with "I May Destroy You" iirc.

I still think had Letitia not been such a controversial figure, she could've gotten the cover. But then again, Brie Larson didn't get a cover despite having the lead role in Captain Marvel. So yeah, maybe Anna did have her sights set on Michaela for a long time.

True, they weren't leading roles but still significant enough to make an impact and be recognizable to the tens of millions of Americans who've seen them. Whereas I think I May Destroy You had quite a modest viewership here, it was not a mainstream hit and I'd wager a very, very tiny percentage of Americans know who she is or have seen her show -= though hopefully that will change come November. This is all just silly details but I guess my point is, once again I'm defending Anna and saying I don't think it's merely white British actresses she'll take a chance on and I think this cover is perhaps the clearest evidence of that to date.
