God, the Avedon story is Dr. Zhivago meets Lady Snowblood… Swoonworthy in all its cinematic, resplendent worldbuilding— and with Veruschka to boot… (Did Meisel ever plunder— I mean pay homage, to this story in VI…???)

Have you watched, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel? They include footage of the shoot, etc.

^^^ Meisel gets an absolute pass for gorgeous "LA Sequels"… It’s definitely its own thing: A train setting is too common and his story has more in common with the Harry Potter movies in terms of setting than this Avedon shoot LOL

^^^ If there's one story I wouldn't mind (actually am begging for) Meisel to give the epic 30pg treatment and as an unabashed, unapologetic unleashed tribute to Avedon-- it would be this story (with maybe just less fur...).

i love that EPIC editorial, Diana Vreeland was a truly one of the greatest editors! The story is rumoured to have cost $1 million dollars back in the day — that would be equal to $7 million today.

If it were 2003, I would be there begging for that with you!

Unreal! Even a million dollar budget for a fashion story in 2020 is staggeringly indulgent and extragavant (let alone 7 mill...). But in 1966, OMG. This is why such legendary imagery will always endure-- is eternal, while today's nonsense is immediately forgotten once it's swiped to the left.

@Phuel so true! almost every editorial from the past decade is not worth it in my opinion, talking about Vogue USA, it's so sad, because Diana was and will always stay classy over Anna and many more coming their way in the future(i don't even want to think what it would like....) i love the 60s 70s era, because she used to send models, photographers and a big team to travel the world and to show us the beauty of it,not just a bunch of studio photoshoots with green or grey screen,it's the same with the movies.it may cost a lot more money these days, but this is fashion and this is editorial that will stay in my mind forever, and not only this one,i love all the editorials from India, Peru, Thailand, Greece...so EPIC!

I think his campaign for Moncler with Daria Strokous was very reminiscent of this. He also wrote a piece in appreciation of 60s Vogue and this particular story for Vogue US too.
