When I look back at Vintage Vogue, the thing that strikes me often is that while the models are all young, they look like sophisticated chic women of the world. I look at Vogue today and almost all the models look like girls. They don’t seem chic, sophisticated or even self possessed. Don’t get me wrong, many are lovely, but don’t feel quite “ripe” enough to be in Vogue. I know times change, but it’s something that I’ve really noticed as of late and as I look back at older issues of the magazine. In today’s Vogue there seems to be no gravitas or even any remote sex appeal. When I look at the models in this issue, most of which I would work with when I started my own career a little more than a year later, they look like they have lived a life and had a few lovers. I certainly had a couple by the time I appeared in Vogue in late 1977. Ha.
