Vanity Fair June 2022 by Annie Leibovitz

Probably fun for collectors, but I can't get into the Star Wars shows so this particular one isn't a must-have for me. I like the tradition of these covers from Vanity Fair, though. I'll always keep my Carrie Fisher Star Wars cover from a few years ago, though!

I've as much interest in this as I did all the other Star Wars covers, but even if people feel Star Wars is being churned out and run into the ground, the films/TV shows are still a massive draw and big business, so it's natural that Vanity Fair would keep covering them.

Although I'm surprised they haven't gone down the traditional route of offering several different covers.

How I imagine the discussions for this issue went:

Flicking through this (UK edition) online ahead of receiving my subscription copy, it's 142 pgs, it opens with the new Chanel campaign, but that's about it for exciting adverts.

Commenting on Star Wars, Radhika's editor's letter notes that "like our own universe, it's still expanding". There are exclusive reports on five new Star Wars shows, plus Squid Game and Succession. Daisy Edgar-Jones opens the Vanities section, plus Soo Hugh and Emma Raducanu. There's a short piece about 'the fetishisation of Russian women' and rags-to-riches stories, then it's into the Star Wars portfolio and article.

There's a look at publishing platform Substack, something about virus research, photography from the war in Ukraine, and the rest of the issue is taken up by the Awards Insider section, which has various interviews and portfolios, and at the back, Lily Tomlin answers the Proust Questionnaire.

From this superficial midnight flick-through, there's nothing I disliked about the content, but I haven't seen 90% of the shows mentioned in this issue, so I don't feel very involved with the content, and I definitely wouldn't buy this from the newsstand. None of that is Vanity Fair's fault, but I'm aware the following issue is set to be a combined Jul-Aug issue, and that usually has a good number of varied articles, making it a more satisfying read, so I'm already more interested in that one.
