Like Father Like Son: Victor Demarchelier Exhibits His Pictures
by Liz McGrath posted on March 02, 2009

Its nice to see when a son or daughter decide to follow in their parents footsteps, not because they have to, but because they really want to. Thats the case when it comes to Victor, the son of legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier. It cant be easy to follow on from one so great, but young victor obviously isn’t daunted, and judging by the show that he put on last night in the new Cooper Square event space ‘MINA’ in New York, this kid has got some serious skills himself. Since graduating in 2006, Victor has been employed by his father, working daily in the studio and learning as much as he can. At MINA, Victor exhibited a mixture of work: fashion stories; portraits of his girlfriend the model Caroline Trentini; personal projects including still lifes and studies; snapshots from a trip to India and even a portrait of his father. His favorite piece is a photograph of teddybear that was given to him by his grandmother upon birth. The bear is called Nalla, which is Swedish for teddy bear; he calls the picture “Self-Portrait.” Victor wasnt alone in the ‘famous offspring’ category last night – his friend Alexandra Richards was also there, exhibiting her artwork – and yes she is the daughter of Keith Richards from The Rolling Stars – obviously these kids have creativity in their blood!

Victor Demarchelier Debuts Solo Show, Talks Shooting Ex-Girlfriend Caroline Trentini

Victor Demarchelier's first solo New York show, "Creating Images," opens today at Clic Gallery, featuring 20 pieces taken over the past few years. Demarchelier, son of Patrick Demarchelier, describes the mostly black-and-white collection as "very personal" — works included range from a still-life shot of his childhood teddy bear to a number of topless photos of Caroline Trentini, his girlfriend of three years, of whom he says: “I’ll tell her about a shot before we go to the studio and then two out of three times she says ‘No.’”
Victor, 25, who has photographed for Vogue Paris, Interview, and 25, only minimally retouches his images: “I like when they’re rough. I don’t always spot them; that way they’re more like a piece of art. The accidents can be beautiful, too.” And he currently shares a studio space in Chelsea with his father. “We like to talk to each other while the other one is shooting. Sometimes we definitely get on each other’s nerves,” he laughs.

Is there room for two photographers in one family? If that family is the Demarchelier one, well, sure. Victor D.—Patrick’s son—has been quietly racking up credits (and a show, back in March, at New York’s Clic Gallery) for a few years now, but his latest project sounds like it could be a game-changer: a collaborative shoot with his father. Both Demarcheliers are working on the November issue of Vogue Brasil, which is traditionally devoted to Rio. Sources say Victor flew down to shoot two editorials in the Brazilian city recently, and is now back in New York shooting a third editorial and the cover in the company of his father, styled by Vogue Brasil fashion director Giovanni Frasson and starring the very lovely Isabeli Fontana (pictured, on set). It will be the first published collaboration between the two—occasion enough for Fontana to fly out a little late to the Paris shows.
