Vogue China June 2023 : Dongyu Zhou by Dan Beleiu

Vogue China's weakest cover this year so far, but I have high hopes on this issue nonetheless.

I actually like this: it's simple yet somehow beautiful. I like the elegance about the styling, no crazy pose or crazy makeup and hair. It doesn't scream powerful and Vogue-ish but it does appeal to me visually speaking, this girl is fresh / young / pretty and the layout is cool and sharp. It definitely feels like a new Vogue for 2023 made for social media, it doesn't feel like the good old Chinese Vogue from Angelica Cheung but yeah all in all it's giving me a modern interpretation of it. Margarett is an interesting editor in chief for me.

You should see the backlashes on Chinese social media towards this magazine and the editor...

I LOVE the video !!! Thanks so much for finding it and sharing it Zorka, you're amazing!!!

Great editorial once again and again and forever lol chinese magazines and asian magazines are always WORLDS AWAY from what is being done in magazines in the US or in Europe for that matter.

Seeing a covershoot such as this one, then this is the side of fashion I will always cherish : the high fashion very glamorous outfits + the sexy poses + the electricity in the eyes + the refined layout in the editorial = this is what made me love Vogue when I was a teen. Nowadays all the Vogue editions are boring and show normcore, dull and sad stories when it's all about inclusivity and age, gender and everything anything in between but not about the dream or the unattainable dreamy clothes or an elevated world where I want to be in.

I love it, although very teen vibes
Could be for Vogue +

backlashes on Chinese social media:

ever since Margaret Zhang era, vogue china trying to make a high fashion vibe, but most of the people can not understand what they are doing, and people in Chinese website feel like they are doing this magazine to present the western stereotypes of chinese fashion, everything is so gloomy, it looks like a horror movie.. (but at the same time VOGUE is more believe they doing something high fashion, and don't care about what people think..)so some people feels like Margaret Zhang never wants to please reader, she is only doing this for impress Anna Wintour or Condé Nast Publications..

and also, VOGUE China now force the cover star to sign a contract, if you becoming the star of vogue cover, you can't not becoming other magazine's cover star in 3 months.. and some editor in other magazine feel like VOGUE China trying to be the BOSS of Fashion in China.. Making rules and principle for this industry...

Wow, but that actually makes sense cause we westerners eat it up lol Its fantastic
But i wonder, what the chinese want?

I think most chinese people like simple clean classic beauty... maybe like korean TV kind of style, beautiful girl with clean make-up and beautiful smile...

Cheap, budget, sloppy gradient cover is the perfect summation of just what a throwaway issue this is.

4 reprints: Annie’s CGI MET advertorial; Nigel’s shoot with Emily that everyone loves so much; Rafael’s latest annoying saturated assault on the eye— the one with Anok and Sorah; and Harry Lambert’s student assignment faux red-carpet-on-a-budget shoot with Emma Corrin. Besides the coverstory, there’re 2 other OG Chinese ones. But they’re as forgettable and throwaway as the coverstory, so nothing worth a repeat viewing. Altogether, it’s so random and just looks and feels like quick fillers to churn out an issue: The Chinese equivalent of a typical UK Vogue issue.

Looks like the Edward’s signature martial law of mediocrity and banality, with the usual headcount gentrification, is surely infecting Vogue China now. Won’t be long before even Vogue Korea will look just like Italia/France.

It's truly a bad issue as mentioned above. I also don't recall seeing that beauty editorial of Grace inside.

My dear @crmsnsnwflks, "Vogue Beauty Paper" is Vogue China's supplement founded by Margaret Zhang in September 2021. Up till now they've released a sum of seven issues (I think they come with a regular printed issues, but I'm not entirely sure), by this order:

2021.09 - Natalie Portman
2021.12 - Jessica Chastain
2022.03 - Léa Seydoux
2022.06 - Hailey Bieber
2022.07 - Liu Wen
2023.01 - Natalia Vodianova
2023.06 - Grace Elizabeth

Now, I'm gonna revisit all of them and update if necessary.
