Vogue Italia November 1990 : Christy Turlington by Steven Meisel

I swear, had I not known by the tittle of this thread, I’d have been none the wiser in thinking on first impression that covershot is Lineisy (...and she’s finally come out of her shell).

Christy has this uncanny, totally effortless ability to resemble the ethnicity of her environment: And she looks absolutely gorgeous as a biracial icon of Japanese/Caucasian descent here. She is the face of everywoman of every decade/age/time/space. Both Demarchelier and Meisel’s stories are equally captivating in every single imagery and as a full story. And full of warmth— and all so timeless.

There was an article years ago about supermodel beauty where a fashion editor recalled seeing an ancient statue in a museum - and it looked just like Christy Turlington.

^^^ No kidding.

I always thought it was Meisel who said that Christy resembled the infamous Queen Nefertiti bust… And Herb had said that she had a perfectly symmetric face— or was that Meisel again…??? Whomever it were that said it, they’re not exaggerating that Christy embodies the ideal face of all ethnicities. I remember seeing Christy walk Gaultier’s Le Grand Voyage and thinking how much she looked like my mum: Christy really could pass for Manchurian. And the collection before this one, she was gorgeous as Indian royalty of the Maharaja days. Once in lifetime, and we’re fortune to have a model like Christy live out our fashion fantasies in the eras full of the best talents.

Such a gorgeous issue-- and so personal. They just don’t do this sort of thing anymore these days.
