Vogue Turkey February 2016 : Irina Shayk by Norman Jean Roy

Why doesn't Norman Jean Roy shoot for mainline Conde titles like Vogue and Vanity Fair anymore? Did he piss off Anna?!

Well actually, Norman's got an edit in next month's issue of American Vogue. This is after his very recent covers for Bazaar. So my question is, how does he gets away with working for both Hearst and CN? Is he really that much in demand?

Interestingly enough, he shot Irina for Spanish Bazaar last month. I wouldn't be surprised if he pushed for her to get this cover.

I find this to be a very compelling cover. There's definitely a contradiction between the soft, flowy styling and the pastel palette with Irina's sexbomb nature. For me, Irina is a bit like Izabel Goulart -- really exceptional at a certain kind of style of modeling, but not very versatile. Irina never reads as soft, to me. She's always strong, sexy, confident, mysterious, alluring, powerful, dark, etc. The styling here would be far more suitable for someone a bit more ethereal. But, now that I've seen the whole editorial, it seems like Irina is a perfect choice. Because she's so innately at odds with the ultra-feminine styling it adds a complexity to the story; like she's this commanding panther trapped in a faux world of 'pretty'.

very beautiful I love the model, the background and the dress. They all work perfectly. I love the ed too very cinemaric

This editorial is a beautiful surprise. Norman Jean Roy brought something special out of Irina. This is really good.

I like the editorial quite a bit, Norman has captured Irina beautifully. I like Irina in certain settings, but I agree that she is not very versatile. I think she can do raw and stripped down (yet still commanding) like her Harper's Bazaar Spain editorial really well and she can of course do sexy incredibly well (her VMan editorial shot by Sebastian Faena is one of the hottest editorials I've ever seen), but sadly that's all I've seen from her where I'm convinced. I don't think she can do "soft" and I think when given too much eye shadow she tends to cross over into trampy territory (i.e. Atelier Versace show).

The story had all the elements for a stunningly emotional edit, but Irina wasn't the right girl for this. I wish her people are trying to make her out as some versatile model, which she's not. It's like Adriana Lima all over again. Great photography and styling though.
