Worked security at the Fillmore and Warfield for three years. Memorably, I saw and loved: Elvis Costello, Cassandra Wilson, Patti Smith, PJ Harvey, Belle & Sebastian, David Grisman, Nick Cave, Ray Davies, Angelique Kidjo, Fela Kuti, Souixsie & the Banshees, Echo & the Bunnymen, Biz Markie, LL Cool J, Waterboys, Cranberries, Van Morrison, White Stripes, Gillian Welch, Fatboy Slim, the Monkees (!), Ozomatli, Los Lobos, Bjork, Violent Femmes, to name but a few. Those stand out. But there are literally hundreds of shows I've seen. Not all are really very memorable.
Out of them all, the only one who really blew me away that I'd never heard of or been a fan of until seeing them was Belle & Sebastian. Such tremendous musicianship, grace, and humor. And the fans were really, really great. I had to watch the balcony and enforce balcony rules, like "No blocking the aisles with dancing!" But as soon as they played the first song, about 100 kids charged the lower loge aisle and danced, danced, danced. And they were so gentle and happy a crowd, there was no real need to enforce the rule for them. No one was going to throw anyone off the balcony like you'd normally worry about. Plus, they, the balcony dancers, were all dressed like it was 1962; it was very disconcerting, because their manner was innocent like that, too. All buttoned-down buttoned-up cotton blouses and wool jackets and knee-length skirts and ribbons in hair and well-scrubbed faces. Everything pressed and matched and clean and proper. Not a tshirt, jean, or *** hanging out in whole lot of them. It almost had to be deliberate. Or perhaps they were all Scottish, and they still dress like it's 1962 when they go out, because trendy synthetic clothes makes their skin itch. I dunno. They were lovely though. It gave me nostalgia for a time I don't remember.
