Why is androgyny such a popular thing?

I'll admit to not knowing a great deal about such things, but it seems that androgynous models and the androgynous aesthetic are quite sought after. So why is androgyny so popular?

I personally only like androgyny for two reasons:
1. When its like searching for the hidden image or illusion in artwork.
2. When it provokes what is traditionally considered to be masculine/feminine and there is a point being made.

Although I think it may be popular as it's simply a theme that may not have been explored quite as much in the past as it is now, and people like things that push the 'boundaries'. It'll probably get beaten to death and then a new fad will come along.

it's more than a trend...
it's something that's been around for years...it's just a bit more mainstream at the moment...

we also have a thread on adrogyny somewhere...it's pretty amazing actually...
i'd say it's one of the best threads on tFS...

here it is...

i think the first post of that thread answers this question really...
the definition of androgyny means it encompasses both masculine and feminine elements/traits...
as a result, it appeals to a vast number of people...

I think its mostly aboutthe mystery ... if it is mysterious its instantly appealing .. you wanna know/see more ...

Many reasons, hmmm...

Maybe that I can pretend to be a tomboy for once, which I'm fyi not.

I also like very pure and clean looks, and womenswear inspired by menswear tends to have those qualities.

And yes, I have to admit it, I'm too fan of Alt that whatever she wears become a mandatory worship.. don't like admitting this, but yes..

I think it's mostly because will/intelligence/determination inspires people and the androgynous is more associated with these properties than a girlie look.

I think why people make a big deal of androgyny is mostly the appeal of genderless beauty. Andrej Pejic is surely the brightest example of androgynous beauty. I am just not into the whole boyfriend thing no matter how many femmes are in love with the boyfriend look. There is just something artistically beautiful about (to me) a male who looks every bit as lovely as a female. Sometimes, there is even a lovely and artistic manner about certain females who look every bit as lovely as males. I find beauty in such illusions. So that's why I think this is so popular. However, I don't want to use the word "popular" as if it is some new trend people are picking up on and liking. Just my thoughts...
