who knows, you might be right. ;)

on that note, i think i'm going to try and have a cobbler add some rubber soles to my leather boots. last year i slipped and fell, dropping my Balenciaga bag on the gross ice.

that's ok Meg.. who knows ..

thanks for the suggestions elle. i'll check Aquatalia out too.

TPR I think stands for thermoplastic rubber. It says it performs well in slippery conditions.

I almost slipped once or twice on the ice last winter but that was about it. The worst I did was hurt my ankle, I didn't fall. I landed on my a** one year wearing a pair of Franco Sarto boots, so if you've ever worn those there's a real life comparison for you, lol. I decided to wear running shoes the rest of that winter for the traction. :p

I hate looking for winter boots. Where I live it's around 0°C to -10°C all winter and so it's necessairy to have a good pair of winter shoes. But I never have any luck finding winter boots that are stylish. It seems that all the boots that are availbale here are either not warm enough or very boring or childish looking. I don't get it..you could make huge profits selling fashionable winter boots. When I visited Sweden last winter they had such a broad range of different winter boots.
I got trough last winter by wearing over-knee chunky knit wool socks in my leather boots and that was okay but the grip of those boots was of course not very good. So this year I'm again on the hunt for a good pair of winter boots.

I'm looking for winter boots too. I live in NYC so I need boots that are warm, preferably at least mid-calf tall, waterproof, and look nice. :p I don't want to spend more than $200. Anybody have any suggestions?

What I've disliked about Winter boots is wearing them in warmer weather, when it isn't really cold, or not messy to walk around on. A very warm jacket with Winter boots on a day that's about 75 degrees isn't a very good idea. Plus, you're trying too hard. Snow is rare here in Houston, so I've seen countless fashion disasters as well as those trying to look fashionable fail miserably.

I guess your average sheepskin boots (like UGGs and UGG knockoffs) will do for any very cool day. Get some of the more extreme boots for miserably cold days or where freezing cold weather and snow happen often. The best kind of Winter-type boots I'd look into would be something fitting for your area. If you're looking for some durable and functional boots to get you through snowy days in (and I'm generalizing) Helsinki, you're better off getting functional boots designed to help you better walk around snowy areas. So you'd want something functional and useful like these...

As far as Winter boot designs go, I dislike boots with those pom pom dangling things. You just don't have to go out and find the most monsterous pair of Winter boots if it isn't miserably cold or miserable to walk around on. Same goes for trying to look "cute" in the cold. Winter boots are for cold weather and not for style.

my skin never seemed to suffer too badly...i just moisturise a lot...i have quite oily skin which i think in that climate is a blessing.. but my feet were always freezing... i don't have very good circulation...

i've just been looking at the la canadienne site...i love these boots! :woot: might have to check them out when i get there....wish they had prices online... these are the only ones that really stood out to me... not so sure about the rest...the heels are too chunky for me i think..

I've got these! They're so comfy. You better do something with the soles though, they're a bit slippery.

yeah, I don't think looking good and preparing for the cold are mutually exclusive. I've been wearing my Frye Engineer boots and they keep my feet pretty warm actually

Agreed, I have never worn anything 'extreme' like John posted and I have lived in -20 C degrees winters. Of course high heeled boots might be out of question when there's snow everywhere, but if you need really warm winter boots, get some leather boots with fur inside. It keeps the heat in. Oh yeah and rubber soles, lol. :flower:
