Hi guys..really intresting thread you have here.
RIP Mr Arafat and i hope your dreams of a land for the Palestine people comes true.
Also that both sets of people can live together peacefully

I would hope that the nations will one day be able to live together regardless. Even those who support the Palestinians agree that there was definately some corruption going on. Arafat's influence is very far removed from the impact that Nelson Mandela had, and continues to have, for good. If he had been as great as some seem to believe, I sense that the relations would be in a better state than they are today. Despite making statements against the violence, he really didn't take any huge steps that have led to peace. I'm not as politically oriented as some here, but I honestly cannot see any huge improvements thanks to him. Maybe the next leader will be better?
P.S. To be honest, kragirl, I'm having some trouble understanding you here as well.
P.P.S. Still friends?

So sorry to resurrect this but had to reply. I think this thread has shown the beauty of fashion -it gives people an international perspective: foreign designers, the different accents on models, unusual beauties, historical ethnic dress etc etc. At least all of you aren't apathetic. It is so much better to have disagreements but stil care enough to argue.

I personally think that the fate of the Middle East and Islam was decided long ago with the fall of the Soviet Union. America became unrivalled in 1989 and the zionists in the US government had an agenda which concerned Israel. It wasn't a question of Israel's existance -that most liberals including myself understand -but its expansion and larger objectives.
Even when the TV cameras were focused on the elections in Ukraine this year and the coup in Georgia last year, as the camera panned round you could see the zionist flag. Thus there are zionist interests in the most inexpected of places. The news shows turmoil in Iraq -in fact there is little to concern the Americans. The only people being killed by the 'terrorists' or mossad or whoever they are, are the Iraqis themselves. However it is enough excuse for the abuse of Abu Ghraib and other such facilities. In the last few days Bush has already shown an insiduous interest in Iran. The only solution -and it is a sad one -is that the West and Zionism will eventually get the upperhand in the middle East and Arafat's dream will never come to fruition. Whether the Palestinians will become like the Native Americans -only visible in old photographs in dusty museums -who knows -but they wont get their freedom because any who oppose Israel's destructive policies stand no chance. America like Rome will fall -perhaps centuries from now and it will be from the inside. In the meantime much damage will be done because it has escalated into a "we are right you are wrong" culture. Indeed fashion and culture is an indicator of the American political mindset. The Ottoman Empire was a vast powerful empire too and incorporated many peoples. However where the American culture is like a parasite and is replacing many individual cultures around the world, the Ottoman Empire incorporated the different aspects of its subjects respective cultures into its own. It was a much more caring hegemony.

I believe in a two state solution and restoring the occupied territories to the Palestinians in accordance with the borders of 1967. I believe in both people living side by side and I like to describe myself as both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian with all the load those two terms imply. However I suspect that it is Israel -and lets face it it is the one with the power and therefore is the one calling the shots -does not agree with my liberalism or my humanitarianism.
