Yoshítaka Amano - Illustrator

I love this, such intricate detail...and everyone looks kinda androgynous

Amano is one of favorite artists ever. for his participation in the Final Fantasy series alone already!

thanks for reviving the thread
i'm amazed how he uses watercolour. all these different colours under one colour. i wonder what his trick is

I'm tired of it when the filter works this way. it actually looks uglier than the target word.
and many japanese words are to be caught in the filter and end up looking bad.

gius, one of the tricks looks like what is called "tarashikomi".

i think he must be working on a huge canvas. and he just dabs the paint on
from far away or when the images are shrunk into prints, the dots just merge, yet no flatness... it makes a very rich, living colour. just like an impressionist

ah ! thank you runner
i'll try it tonight and see what happens :-D
The tarshikomi technique is an art form were, while the colored paint is still wet, one drops more ink onto the painting, making several layers, usually in a dripping form for fine details such as ripples in water or flower petals on a tree.

the title seems fixed now...
& it's search-able too.

I love his art work, specially the illustrations he does for the final fantasy games. They are to die for *_*

from http://gallery.aethereality.net/list/artist/84/ (really urge you all to visit this link, it's one of the best galleries for this artist along with his own website that I have found).

Yoshítaka Amano has hands down been my favourite artist since I was 11 (and picked up my first Final Fantasy game). Also introduced me to Gustav Klimt, another of my favourites.

thanks a lot for the link, edelweiss! there is a lot i haven't seen before there..

does he sometimes make work that's not part of a story? like non-manga or video game
there is this one i'm curious about --not sure what it is about. sort of reminds me of the paintings of Hell by Hieronymus Bosch

He has also done a lot of set design and stained glass works. As far as I know most of the works in that gallery are from his 1989 exhibition Hiten. A few are also from his first publicised collection of paintings in 1984 Maten (Evil Universe). They both seem to be a collection of works he has done for various games, mangas and written works.

That image is from Maten (it's the front cover of the publication). I can't id exactly what it's from however...

He has done a lot of work not related to gaming etc. If you take a look at the bibliography section of his site (http://www.amanosworld.com/html/biblioindex.html) there's brief descriptions of his various other works & the inspirations behind them.

i absolutely love amano he's quite a genius i've been following his work for years and years

I've always loved Amano's work, the delicacy of it is amazing. Very iconic, I was first introduced to his work through the Final Fantasy series. Love the ominous/art nouveau feel to his work...

I first became aware of his work through his illustrations for the Vampire Hunter D novels and The Dream Hunter which is a Sandman series spinoff. It's a really, really gorgeous book- not just for the illustrations, but the story is a lovely one too. And his drawing style is amazing- so lush and intricate, not at all typical of most comic artwork today (I'd say CLAMP draws manga with a lot of flourishes too, but it's in black and white and has a completely different spirit).

Drusilla that behemoth artwork picture is one of my favorites. I love how the Warrior of Light and companions are totally at a disadvantage. I still want the Special edition FFXI soundtrack so I can get the huge overworld art foldout.

^ agreed, Desi. I wish the autocensor would stop blocking out his name though- every configuration in which those letters are used together is not a swearword!
