How you wear black - matte vs. shine; textures; w/other colors etc.

Someone awhile back here made a great point that she tries not to wear black with brights of other colors due to a feeling that it sort of cheapens the black. (Feel free to disagree - but her comment made me realize how much I like pairing black with neutrals.)

And further reflection on black led me to realize that personally I prefer matte black and textures vs. the very black blacks that one gets w/solid black leather or certain fabrics.

So now I'm trying to put together my 'black lite' look.. what goes here is:

- black suede (even though it's deep, it's not shiny)
- blackwash jeans (a faded look not for goodness sakes an actual black)
- microfiber sometimes
- black sweaters, especially bulky instead of fine-knit ones - and wool more than silk etc.
- 'signature canvas' types of purse construction (w/o signature or much of one)
- what else? examples?

I love very black black, but I don't think it's usually a great idea to wear deep, glossy black from head to toe.

Suede, matte velvet and cozy cashmere sweaters, for instance, are great to combine with sleeker blacks I think.

love mixing diffrent black textures
rough silk
lace
velvet
rough knit stuff
patterned black+black textile
not fond of shiny black [like patent leather] things

i don't know...
i don't think you can really ever go wrong with black...

-it always looks more expensive than it is..
-it's very slimming...
-it never shows stains or dirt...
-it's appropriate for day or evening...
-casual or formal..etc...

it's VERY hard to look bad in black...imo...
personally, i prefer deeper, darker blacks...

they look so much RICHER...
mmmmm.....^_^

*and if you mix textures...you can add real depth to any outfit...

-i love to mix blk/ivory/browntones...
-blk and grey is so delicious...
-blk and navy is incredibly chic...:brows:
-blk and red is very always very bold and striking...
-i'm starting to feel like mixing black with pale colours...like blush...
-i really like burgundy and hunter green w/blk...
*sort of 'regal woodsy colours'...it feels very 'english' to me somehow...

**the only thing maybe i don't like is blk denim...
but i don't like any denim really...

the devil's advocate... :P
...black with colour

because I am literally drawn to colour when I enter any shop :ninja: ...But things look best and stand out with black. and all my 'basics' are black anyway.

It is!

I never used to wear blues until a few years ago, and I think navy has gotten a lot cooler than it used to be. It's almost like it's black's equal... Almost, because nothing can really equal black.

I try to stay away for what I call "dead black", black that doesn't have nuance.. Not sure if that makes sense..

I love black with navy/blue as well..

Black with a single bold colour reminds me so much of Liza Minelli's way of dressing and I dont like that association :D

i know what you mean hanne...
i call it 'flat'...
but it means the same thing as 'dead'...it has no 'life' to it...
anything too matte...or faded knits...

tott...totally agree on the navy assessment...
i feel myself drawn to deep navys more and more....
but black is always best...

Oh that's interesting. Would love some elaboration from anyone.

I've always been drawn to black, and though I have the occasional 'affairs' with colors, it is def. the one I return to.

As previously said, mixing the materials makes the black so much more alive, and imo you avoid the object effect, square for example. Mixed textures help to make silhouettes instead (it's kinda difficult to explain).

I can see black beeing paired with every other color, depending on hair, eyes, skin etc. I mostly use it with darker colors (hunter green, navy, grey) and with white, but really, I think it's one of the, if not the, most versatile color (btw, my friends and I have always discussed if black is a color or not.. I say yes).

Edit; Is glossy black like black satin.. shiny?

 Yes but I did that in the 80s and now am phobic about it! I have 'Nagel' coloring anyway (dark hair, pale skin), which lends itself to cartoonish quickly. Guess I'm going through a 'subtle' phase. Kind of.

you seem to have similar colouring to me...
(i LOVE nagel btw)...

i know what you mean about looking like a cartoon...
*not that i would mind looking like a cartoon...^_^
but i always feel much more conspicuous and 'clownish' in bright colours or florals...
you run the risk of looking like chiquita banana imo...
cha cha cha... ... :ninja:

the darker your hair i find....
the better you will look in black and the easier it wiill be for you to wear...

it does get more difficult as we age...
then you need to lighten it up by the face...
ie-add a pretty pin y your shoulder or nklc or a light top under your blk jkt or cardi...

I agree with loving different textures and fabrics in black

I don't like black patent,it often looks cheap

I don't mind a splash of black satin with something else, cashmere for example

I remember when black and navy was a no-no...or my mom said it was anyway:lol: ...and I haven't owned a navy garment since the early nineties...but the new black and navy is so chic,so smart, and totally rocks. Especially if the navy is a bit satiny/silky IMO.

I did black and brights in the eighties too...I can never go near brights of any description again, with or without black:lol: .

I wear black with greys,taupes,camel,other black,burgundy,plum and variations thereof,etc.

Soft I would like to see black done successfully with pastels...it never looks "balanced" to me.

quirky agreed !
sometimes patent can look tacky . . a bit p*rnstar
but i still desperately want a pair of patent black roundtoe flats
& i've never been able to figure out why black doesn't go w/pastels
not tht i ever wear 'pastels' anyway :yuk:

aslong as the black isn't PVC i'm gd to go !
& the mixing of textures adds depth . . .
to wht can become a plain expanse of black

+ as evry has mentioned already.
black + deep navy = gorgeous ! :crush:
black + neon/bright colours = potential fauxpunk rocker / 80s :mohawk:
black + neutrals {cream / ivory} = safe option
black + other deep dark rich colours {emeralds / forest greens / maroon} = :woot:

i just love black !

ps. just realised i've rptd evrythn tht has been said. :P

chanel we really are style soul mates......

quirky...i was thinking something like this...
http://www.thefashionspot.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1055374&postcount=8
sort of a dusty rose...
i feel like the black swtr 'anchors' the outfit...
i tried all sorts of grey first...but it just SNAPS when you add black...

**i think black is especialy effective as piping or trim on a pastel top or jkt...
it sort of 'outlines' the garment and makes it less wishy washy...
gives it some 'power'...

regarding patent leather...i am actually a big fan of patent leather shoes...
i don't think it's the patent that can look cheap...but the shoe itself...

here is a great example of mixed textures...
