So, as I found out, my dear coworkers gathered $100 to buy me a present. That's very sweet of them, but it doesn't change the fact that they wouldn't know style if it was waving a big stylish flag in front of them. So, what should I ask for? It can't be a gift certificate - it has to be something tangible and lasting (so no cologne or anything like that). So far I could only come up with a CDG wallet (the problem is I am not supposed to know that they are doing this for me, so if my spy tells them "a wallet", I'll get something from Coach), or a really nice book. The question is, which book? Can someone point to a worthy book on fashon, photography, or architecture? I found this one, but I'm not sure how good it is.

Just throw any recommendations at me for a present, I apprecaite it. :flower:

The Long ShotA God's Eye View of the SituationBy RICHARD LACAYO

Yann Arthus-Bertrand is an aesthete with the soul of a moralist. He uses the beauty of the world to beguile you into a photograph in which a larger lesson awaits. His lesson is about the planet in jeopardy. For the past decade the 57-year-old Frenchman has been taking aerial shots over deserts, volca- noes, rain forests and cities. He turns natural formations and highway interchanges into nearly abstract, high-luster photographs—and also into food for thought. If his pictures are beautiful, the realities they point to are not: deforestation, desertification, unbridled development. "Each photograph," he explains, "has something to say about our environment."

Arthus-Bertrand has been spreading his message in a series of best-selling Earth from Above photo books and a traveling outdoor show of nearly 150 4-ft. by 6-ft. prints accompanied by captions that link the images to the environmental issues at stake. Since the show was first mounted in Paris four years ago, it has been seen by millions of people in 53 cities. To find a project of comparable ambition, you have to look back to "The Family of Man," the milestone 1955 museum show that toured the world to illustrate common threads in the human fabric. But that exhibition involved scores of photographers. Arthus-Bertrand spearheads his own effort, though even his most delicate images require something like a paramilitary operation—his team now totals 15—to handle planning and logistics. Some nations, like Saudi Arabia and China, have yet to give him flyover permission. "One problem with doing aerial photography," he explains dryly, "is that people think you are a spy."

A subscribtion to the Economist..how much does that cost in the states ?
A case of great wine ( or does that belong in the too perishable category?)
How about a big vase...something for the interior of your home?

It's a huge tome that attempts to comprehensively guide you through the notable architectural projects in almost every country in the world. The information are not in depth but good if you want to read about lesser known but no less outstanding architects.

It's really heavy, make sure ur coffee table is strong enough.

A U.S. subscription to the Economist is $129.

For $125, the Dries book: http://www.contemporaryfashion.net/index.php/none/none/4059/uk/work.html

That's a wonderful idea, droogist, but my wife already got it for me (from IF!) on my Bday ^_^ .

Magazines don't qualify - perishable.

Hanne, I'm afraid to ask for anything that is closely associated with style  :(

Kimkhuu, I would like a sort of a guide book on architecture, or interior design, or fashion.

can you name drop some of your fav artists, architects, etc?

Yea, I can just imagine, "how do you spell Rem Coolhouse?"

Well, my agent's advice about the books flopped, naturally, and my co-workers got me something from Coach - what a f&*%^ing surprise. However, I'm considering keeping it, because it was a thoughtful present. Since they know that I love travelling, they got me a passport case, which doubles as a wallet - thoughtful and useful. I just have a hard time reconciling the fact that I might own something by Coach, even though it's actually stylish and discreet (Mrs. Faust's sarcastic remarks aren't helping either  ).

oh calm down  I don't think Coach is that bad apart from the fact that it's mass produced. But I mean it's not a logo covered girly carryall. I have a great vintage leather portfolio by them that holds up quite nicely. Anyway I think it's quite a useful gift and it's nice of you to appreciate that they at least tried. plus if you returned it, you'd just get a 100 gift certificate for Coach-and do you really want that more than a passport holder?

i also agree with meg...

i actually think that coach has made a fantastic comeback and have a great deal of respect for what they've done with the brand...

(aside from the logo nonsense of course......)

good luck with the new job on monday...!!

I just wanted to suggest Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle book but I think you already got a wallet ;). Coach: it's unknown here so I wouldn't know.
