I think people voted for Sean because of the allegedly homophobic upset when Brokeback didn't win Best Picture.

What a lame way out. Instead of really thinking outside the box and rewarding an amazing achievement by Mickey, they went with the safe and conventional choice of Penn. Nothing against Penn, he's a great actor, but Mickey gave the best performance of the year bar none.

No. I can think of at least two others, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote. And more obvious role, Tom Hanks in Philadelphia.
