Some Person was trying to argue with me that since Helmut shows in New York, he is an American Designer. I said he isn't. He did not start there, he moved his show there some years ago. He was trying to compare the situation with D-Squared who are from Canada but considered Italian. The difference between the both i sthat Dean and Dan started in Milan, while Helmut did not start in New York; therefore he is not an American Designer. He started in Paris damn it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I wouldn't call Helmut Lang an American designer because he shows in NY,just as Stella McCartney would not become a French designer for showing in Paris (no idea where she shows,just an example).

how come? I liked him, his S/S 2004 collection was great! My favorite jacket is a Helmut Lang Jacket out of that collection... although... I must admit I didn't realy like his last S/S collection... The whole sailor theme was not realy my style.

well...i could definitley WAIT for tom ford...
i don't miss the crap he was doing at the end...
i only like what he did at the beginning...
i think helmut was sort of losing it a bit too...
the last few collections didn't have the usual magic...
i'm also sad to have lost jil sander...
***but maybe it makes more room for new designers to have the spotlight ...

I would love it if that were the case... but I'm afraid that maybe it just throws MORE spotlight on the old crusty designers, like Dame Karla, Donatella, Valentino and Giorgio.

Helmut Lang is Austrian based in NY, he's definetly NOT an american designer
his esthetics/culture/education are not american.. how strange to 'argue' on that
same with Dsquared, how could they ever be considered Italian,

helmut has NOT been base in ny for many years...(at least 5yrs)
as i stated above...and as i expect you would know...
he maintained a store and a showroom here...
but so does prada, gucci , ysl, dolce, etc...
none of whom are 'based' in nyc...
he hasn't actually been based here or shown here in ages...
very much to my dismay...
it was the only thing that i used to look forward to during fashion week...

I wouldn't really consider DSquared Italian either but the label seems to be associated with the phrase "Italian sportswear" a lot from what I've seen...a few issues back of GQ they were doing a preview of the latest Italian sportswear and D2 as well as Jil Sander were thrown into the editorial, although I wouldn't really consider either to be Italian fashion.

i think he was very much constrain by the prada commercial mentality and restrict his creative side apparently he left for the same reason jil sander left...Mr. Bertelli.

Thank You Lena. The person arguing with me is my brother and he is always trying to challenge my knowledge on fashion
. How in the world would he consider Helmut American when he plays with minimalism like many French Labels. Americans don't focus on that at all. Lena you are so right, his designs do not look American at all
