American Harper’s Bazaar really liked energy and movement in their editorials. Those photo shoots could be exhausting. I remember them well, but they were very relatable to the reader. I’ve always said that you really can’t have a full understanding of fashion from Vogue alone. It’s only telling part of the story.

Great point! I remember my mother read both every monthly. As a kid, I remember leafing through them and thinking these two magazines are so completely different, and yet, they each fit my mother perfectly.

By people in the business, Harper's was generally, nearly always, considered to be the better and more prestigious to work for.
Until the end of the Mazzola era. And accountants became more important than artists.

I did editorials for both during my model zenith and I remember that they felt very different to work for.

@Jacek I have to admit, it's very interesting to see the differences! Especially because Vogue's history is pretty standard, known, etc. if you're into "vintage" fashion at all. Harper's Bazaar? Not so much, unfortunately. I have to admit, I wasn't a fan of Mazzola's years when I first started looking at them, but they've grown on me.

Thanks for the posting @blueorchid. It’s definitely a solid education of the brand pre-Liz x Fabien Bazaar. Can’t say that Anthony lacked a distinct sensibility— but can’t say I like it either. It’s so of its period and that’s there’s no mistaking it for any era but the tacky 80s LOL Just too 80s musical theatre/Broadway/piano bar mums and their gay BFF in aesthetic for my preference… The cluttered layout alone is a turn-off— like the overstuffed closet of a musical theatre diva’s dressing room… You can smell the suffocating, heaviness of YSL’s Opium; feel the dry, crunchiness of the cans upon cans of aerosol hairspray used in these shoots; hear Duran Duran on the sound system in Scavullo’s studio; ...the massive amount of coke casually shared...

I remember someone once wrote that before Liz x Fabien swept in to revolutionize Bazaar (and the standards of fashion publications in general), it had become this dusty department store catalogue by the late-80s. That’s something interesting to look forward to LOL
