São Paulo’s low-rider culture conjures up lots of audible images, none of which seem to have much to do with a designer like Adam Lippes — he of the quietly chic aesthetic.
But in his hands, ladies will undoubtedly be taking a ride come spring, none the wiser to the sometimes hard-core lifestyle that inspired their wares.
Lippes presented his collection in a small suite atop the Maritime Hotel, where he talked about oversize silhouettes, the lines of the cars and, of course, the ink.
A dramatic lion tattoo, for example, was reinterpreted as a print on a silk midi dress that featured a second chiffon overlay down the front, giving it a multidimensional feel. It was also interpreted as the animal print on a Neoprene jacquard coat worn over a double-face silk T-shirt and shorts, as well as a seriously luxe white python dress.
As low-rider is a lifestyle rooted in denim, Lippes took a Japanese denim with a hardy weft, cut it apart and reembroidered it back together into a great pair of culottes and a boxy top that felt as fresh as the breeze blowing through the terrace doors.
