Sixteen-year-old Addison Gill has made a deal with her parents. They'll let the Caledonia, Ont., teen pursue her dream to become a model, go to glitzy parties with world-renowned designers, hang out with celebrities and travel the world for photo shoots.
But first, she has to do her homework.
It's a deal Addison is trying to live up to in a hotel room in Paris, where she and her mother were in early March for the city's fashion week. It was her latest stop after Milan and New York.
Addison had just returned from a day of castings -- meetings and photo sessions with some of the world's top fashion companies. Just another day in Paris, according to the grade 11 student at Assumption College (high school) in Brantford, Ont.
"Yesterday, there was Karl Lagerfeld, tomorrow I have a casting for Chanel, and there was Valentino the other day," she told CTV.ca from Paris.
Since last year, Addison has been catapulted into the fashion spotlight. She's signed up with Ontario's Sutherland Models, won a prestigious model search conducted by U.S.-based V Magazine, and was booked for the Calvin Klein Fall 2009 show during New York's fashion week. Her agency - which also discovered Canadian model Shalom Harlow -- is confident Addison has supermodel potential.
The praise is fine with Addison, who says she can't believe she's getting paid to do what she likes. But she cautions, modeling may not be as glamorous at it appears in glossy magazines.
"It's very different from what it seems. It's not all glitz and glamour. There's lots of hard work, long days. And there are very high heels," the teen says.
But some of her friends wouldn't mind trading places.
"My friends think it's so cool. I will send them emails, and they'll be -- 'You met Mr. (Stefano) Gabanna!' ... I see these people and am star struck," she says.
'We're not going to change who we are'
Despite meeting some of the top people in the industry and going to a few galas and events, Addison says she's been careful not to overdo the fashion world's party scene.
For now, her mother is making sure of that. Mary-Ann Gill had been traveling with Addison since early February -- a month-long trip which has taken the pair from the U.S. to Europe. But despite Addison's boisterous enthusiasm, her mother is much more cautious.
"We are trying to keep everyone grounded -- that's an absolute must. That's not an option," Gill told CTV.ca from Paris after giving permission to Addison for a homework break so she could conduct a media interview.
"There were certainly parameters that we started with -- we're not going to lose weight. We are not going to change who we are."
And there were also concerns about Addison's school work. Luckily, says Gill, the school let her daughter have a reduced course load this semester. Addison will have to make up a religious education class at Assumption, but her mom says the pair are visiting churches and historical sites while they're in Europe to fulfill part of the requirement. Addison completes the rest of her courses on line.
"At the end of the day, there's no time left to go out and party," Gill says about Addison's venture into the world of high fashion.
"Parentally, it's been working out absolutely perfectly ... but we've had the regular, 'I don't want to. But you have to' -- those kinds of scenarios."
Gill says she has seen some European models about Addison's age that have a "sadness in their eyes." She says some of the young girls are being swept up by the glamour of the business and are going through the fashion world without proper supervision. She adds that eventually her daughter will have to make her own choices, too.
"Somebody will be with her for at least the next year, but we're giving her more string with time," she says.
"It's like anything -- if you have a strong foundation, you have to build on that and you have to trust them."
Addison is already learning a few lessons about the world. She recently had her wallet stolen at a casting session. But for now, she says that she's just enjoying her adventure.
"I am just a school girl. I'm not going to go out and party it up," she says.
