Hanako Maeda, the young designer behind Adeam, struck the perfect balance between traditional Japanese concepts and Western innovation. The outcome was a modern yet delicate resort collection with plenty of textural charm. Inspired by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the designer referenced his latticework structures made from organic materials, which recall Japanese shoji screens, but with a color palette that was pure New York. Translation: a checkered raffia fabric woven into cropped tops, wide-leg pants, a belted trench and a denim jacket. The motif also carried over into evening with silver-beaded embroidered gowns and apron tops.

Maeda also played with the structure and repetition of a Japanese kaleidoscope, hand-painting a gridlike pattern and printing it on floaty chiffon tops and a mixed media gown. Her artistic bent really came through via her wonderful knitwear, most notably a basket weave and crochet dress with fringe.
