Model Agyness Deyn talks to thelondonpaper about work, love and music with 5 O'clock Heroes singer Antony Ellis
Model of the year Agyness Deyn joins new wavers Five O’ Clock Heroes on their new single Who. Malcolm Mackenzie meets singer Antony Ellis with Agy to discuss being single, catwalks v concerts, and what she really thinks of Kate Moss
Has having Agyness on board raised the profile of Five O’ Clock Heroes?
Antony: Yes, of course. It’s great though, because it was a very natural thing.
Agy: A month or so ago we recorded it and we were like, “That sounds wicked”. Now we’re in London and we’ve got a single coming out. It all happened so fast.
Antony: And now she’s making crazy demands, like she wants to come on the road with us, she wants her own mic, her own dressing room.
So will Agy tour with the band?
Antony: Yes, the boys want her to sing all of the songs.
Agy: I’m gonna be Bez at the side of the stage, just dancing.
How did you meet?
Agy: Many moons ago, at a gig.
Antony: In either Manchester or Hull. She gave me a kiss on the cheek.
Was your boyfriend Josh jealous of you spending a lot of time with Antony?
Agy: Well it doesn’t really matter now that I’m single. It was documented in your paper, apparently. I saw my mate Chloe last night and she said: “Sorry to hear about you and Josh.” She said she had read about it in thelondonpaper.
How long have you been into making music?
Agy: I’ve been messing around with it since I was 13, and then did music at college. I was going to go to Paul McCartney’s school of music, but I got spotted as a model and never got round to it.
What’s better, stage or catwalk?
Agy: They’re quite similar, but I think I’d rather have a lot of people around me. The catwalk is second nature to me now: I’m walking down thinking “I’ve got to pay that bill” and “What am I gonna have for my tea?”
What are you going to have for your tea?
Agy: Fish and chips – I’m going to J Sheekey tonight.
Are you a natural show-off?
Agy: I don’t think it’s showing off – I just do what I do. I usually take a back seat, even when we’re out with a big group of friends.
Antony: Unless you’re doing karaoke – ha-ha.
Do you give Antony fashion advice?
Antony: Yes, she does.
Agy: We went shopping recently.
Antony: It was good because I don’t spend a lot of time on fashion.
Agy: There’s something quite attractive about someone who doesn’t know how to dress.
Antony: What are you saying?
Agy: Oh, I don’t mean you. Sorry, that sounded awful, I love you!
You are constantly pitted against Kate Moss – do you get on?
Agy: I really like her. I’ve met her a few times and she’s really lovely. I’ve looked up to her over the years and I’ve only got positive things to say about her.
And she’s nice to you ?
Agy: Er, yeah… yeah.
Antony: She’s never been nice to me. I met her once but was too shy to say hi.
If things don’t work out with Jamie Hince, she’ll be looking for a new boyfriend.
Antony: She’s a little too much for me. I like calm, down-to-earth girls.
Agyness is down to earth – and she’s single!
Antony: That would be incestuous.
Agy: He’s like my big brother – gross.
