Agyness Deyn: The first interview

Agyness Deyn (Pic: New Look)
Just a few years ago she was working behind the counter in her local chippie. Now supermodel Agyness Deyn has the world at her feet.
With her elfin white blonde hair, endless legs and knife-like cheekbones, she's the hottest new girl on the block.
Hailed as a modern-day Kate Moss, at 5ft 9in she's two inches taller, nine years younger... and way cooler.
Demand for her is huge. Agyness is the multi-million-pound face - and body - of Mulberry and Burberry and a Vogue cover girl.
And she has just ousted 34-year-old Kate to become Tatler magazine's Best Dressed Woman Of The Year. But you mention the K-word at your peril to this famously shy model as she talks for the first time about her incredible rise to fame and fortune.
"Of course, I know Kate, I've met her a few times and she's really nice," she says.
With that, her eager agent jumps in saying: "Agyness is not the next Kate Moss... she's not the new anyone. She's just Agyness."
But it's easy to work out how she eclipsed her rival.
The Size 10, 25-year-old is as fresh-faced and nimble as her predecessor is sexy and dissolute.
Thrusting her arms in the air and jumping on the spot at a photoshoot in Paris for the latest trainer, the Reebok Freestyle, she resembles an expensive jack-in-the-box.
Her first break came nine years ago when, aged 16 and working in a Lancashire chippie, she won a competition in her local newspaper and was crowned The Face Of Rossendale.
Two years later, she moved to London and was signed to top agency Models 1.
She never looked back and now has a swish apartment in New York and even a rock star boyfriend, The Paddingtons' guitarist Josh Hubbard.
And so, as she gives her first newspaper interview, her broad Lancashire accent comes as rather a shock.
"I was born in Littleborough, Rochdale, and I like to go back a lot.
I miss my mum so much.
"If I'm working in London then I'll go back on the train. I try to see her as often as I can."
She has her mum Lorraine to thank for her unusual name. When she first became a model, her real name Laura Hollins didn't sound exotic enough for the catwalk.
It was Lorraine who came up with Agyness - a mix of her mother Agnes and her maiden name Dean, with an extra "y" thrown for luck.
Not that Agyness seems to need much... American Vogue last year named her one of the world's next top supermodels. She went on to open A-list shows for Temperley, Anna Sui, Burberry and Missoni.
But, for all the plaudits, she's no designer-clad diva. Away from the catwalk, yoga addict Agyness would rather slop around in second-hand clothes.
Despite her millions, she still has a keen eye for a bargain - and that's why she shuns a chauffeur or cab in favour of a bike...
"I love shopping in New York because everything is half the price," she says. "I've just bought a bike, an old Pashley Princess Classic (an old-fashioned black framed bike with a straw basket) which I ride everywhere.
"I like going to the flea markets in Brooklyn - there are some really nice, cute vintage stores - and when I am on the bike and see a good shop I can jump off and go in and have a look around."
That thrift no doubt stems from her schooldays, when she worked in a fish and chip shop to earn extra pocket money.
"I worked there part-time for a couple of years," she says.
"But I think that's normal. Everyone where I come from had jobs to get a bit of extra money. It's just mine was in a chip shop." With her tiny waist and lean figure, she doesn't look as though she tucks into too many saveloys these days.
But she insists:
"I'm no size-zero. I still eat fish and chips. And pizza.
It's my favourite food and they do the best ones in New York. "People think models starve themselves but not me. I eat really normally.
"I think it's important to be healthy, and for that you are allowed a little bit of everything. If you eat too much you put on weight, if you have a happy medium you stay the same. Every thing in moderation, Especially pizza!
"I work out, not avidly, I don't work out every day. I do yoga, I've just started and I love it." Indeed. Her perfect skin belies the fact that she loves to party - nightclubbing with celebrity chums Lily Allen and Kelly Osbourne.
But she is determined to keep her feet on the ground.
"Yes, I know lots of famous people. But most of my real mates are from back home.
"They're people I went to school with. Lots of them have done really well and got jobs in fashion in London.
"Some are still up North, but everyone's doing really well. I always make an effort to see them.
"My boyfriend Josh threw a big party and all my friends flew out.
His band, The Paddingtons, played and it was mad. It was such a happy day."
Agyness may be only 25, but in the modelling business, competition is fierce - and models are getting younger all the time.
Is she not already looking over her shoulder?
She bridles, again.
"There's no issue about my age. I've never tried to hide it. There's no point. I'm not ashamed of being 25.
"And it takes until you get to your 20s to really make it as a model.
"I get really angry when people say I am an overnight success. I've been modelling since I was at college.
"Back then I hadn't a clue about the industry. I'm still learning.
"The other models don't teach you anything, you pick it up from the photographers.
I am constantly learning all the time.
It took a good two years for me to know what modelling involved - and how to be good at it."
She certainly is "good at it" - stunningly elegant, professional and calm.
As long as you don't mention Kate Moss...
'All my real mates are still from back home'
'I still eat fish & chips.. and love pizza'
'Kate's nice.. but I won't talk about her'
'It isn't overnight success.. I've had to learn'
'I love the life but miss my mum a lot'

I thought Fairy meant that the article set out to give the impression that she's down-to-earth, whereas in reality she may not be. I could be wrong too though!
